Summer 2004 _ Volume 1, Issue 3

BANNER PHASING OUT – Until the implementation of PeopleSoft, Banner has been our enterprise-wide data processing application. Banner is being phased out this summer. Most Banner tasks have been moved to PeopleSoft. If you have any questions or concerns, contact Stephanie Doda, I&IT Associate Vice President, (909-979-6322, sndoda@csupomona.edu) or Tom Adamski, Director, I&IT Applications (909-979-6336, tgadamski@csupomona.edu).

SMOOTH OPERATIONS – I&IT announces a minor reorganization. I&IT Networks becomes I&IT Operations. This group includes staffers that handle campus telephones, voice mail, communications infrastructure, the 869-POLY information phone line and now data services. The latest addition includes the computer operators, who were formally under I&IT Applications.

COMMENCE STREAMING FULL SPEED – Internet users far and wide viewed June’s commencement ceremonies on-line. Just in the first week, our streaming video graduation site saw more than 24,500 successful viewings. Users from more than 40 countries were able to see and hear the ceremonies. I&IT’s Learning group, which includes the university’s multimedia services, recorded and streamed the event, using five cameras.  For a sample, see any of the links on http://video.csupomona.edu/streaming/

BLACKBOARD BUDGETING – The recent campus-wide discussions on budgeting ideas utilized Blackboard extensively. Faculty, staff and students posted many outstanding ideas on-line, using Blackboard’s collaboration features. Many of the ideas discussed on Blackboard were adopted, including the summer 9/80 schedule. For more on the campus’ Blackboard initiative, see
http://www.csupomona.edu/~iit/learning/blackboard/.

IN THE SWIM – I&IT Learning is offering a series of Summer Workshops in Instructional Multimedia (SWIM). Offered in Studio Six (98 C6-13), sessions include hands-on courses in the web development tool Dreamweaver. Other seminars focus on capturing audio, streaming video, basic photography tips, Adobe Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, Fireworks, Blackboard and WebCT.  For additional information, call (909) 869-3099.

HURRAY FOR HARI – I&IT welcomes long-time College of Science Information Technology Consultant Hari Singh, who has transferred to I&IT Systems. Hari will be involved in a variety of activities, with a special project involving distributed network management applications. Hari will be helping roll out Intermapper to selected campus technicians. This will allow the techs to obtain real-time measurements on network utilization, and provide an early warning on potential trouble-spots and bottlenecks.

DEAD-END STUDENT JOB? GUESS AGAIN – We’re happy to report that our recently graduated I&IT student assistants were able to leap right into great jobs. We think some of that resulted in their work experiences here. Winnie Wong, who was part of the PeopleSoft team until her graduation from College of Business’ CIS department, landed a great spot at Accenture. Pauline Salim, a graduate student assistant in I&IT Learning until she earned her masters’ in Educational Technology and Media Studies, is taking a top instructional design position with a local firm. And Uroš Obradovic, another I&IT Learning student assistant, took a grand spot at Microsoft in Colorado as a programmer.

THANKS FOR YOUR SERVICE  – I&IT Applications recently bid goodbye to two long-time programmers. Terry Hinrichsen and Marilyn Kirkpatrick are retiring this summer. Terry is leaving us after 23 years on campus, while Marilyn departs following 27 years here. We wish them well in their retirements.

SAY WHAT? – One recent call to 869-POLY, the campus’ information phone line, was strange. “I just got an e-mail saying I’ve been admitted,” the caller told Sandi Everett, one of our campus operators. “Well, congratulations,” Sandi responded. “How can we help you?” “I need to know why,” the caller said. Puzzled, Sandi quickly answered, “Let me put you through to Admissions.”
