as the new Director of I&IT Learning. David was Director of Distance
Learning at DePaul University in Chicago and has many years experience
delivering state-of-the art education as both a professor and administrator.
Dr. Levin takes over a talented staff. The group’s mission is to help
faculty and students incorporate technology to advance and improve learning.
Dr. Levin’s charges include experts in utilizing interactive video,
supporting our learning management systems, Blackboard (see
item below) and WebCT, graphic design, web page authoring and
consulting, on-line classes and video and audio assisted learning. Among Dr.
Levin’s accomplishments in his 25-year higher-education instructional
career were the development of 100% Internet delivered certificate programs in
Human Resources Management and Prior Learning Assessment, rolling out distance
courses and degree programs and adapting Blackboard. David’s office is in
98-B1-267, just off the Technopolis courtyard. David can be reached at (909)

BroncoDirect, an on-line service to
provide applicants, students, faculty and staff real-time access to a variety
of academic and other information, is open for business. Current students are
able to view their personal portfolios, course catalog and financial aid
information. Faculty and staff advisers may view admissions and test scores. In
the coming months, this service will expand. In April, students will be able to
view the summer schedule of classes and register on-line. In June, faculty can
report their spring grades on-line. No big deal, you say? Imagine the on-line
future. Faculty will be able to submit grades at home at almost any hour. For
details, see:
https://broncodirect.csupomona.edu.
BroncoDirect is our campus' gateway into PeopleSoft's on-line services. PeopleSoft is an enterprise system that is being installed at all 23 CSUs. The CSU's installation of PeopleSoft includes applications for Human Resources, Financial Services, as well as Student Administration. Following on-line services for student administration, self-service features will be added in BroncoDirect for Human Resources and additional financial services.
President J. Michael Ortiz is launching the IT Governance Committee to coordinate IT decision-making for the entire campus. “We’ve made a lot of progress, and each department has its own needs. But there are several cross-campus projects in which we need to agree on strategic directions,” noted Dr. A. Michael Berman, I&IT Vice President. What sort of issues will this group tackle? Hardware and software standards, for example. “There are essentially no university-wide standards for hardware or software. While there is value in allowing individual flexibility in the selection of IT tools, the complete lack of standards has resulted in a costly and unsupportable IT environment. Standards cannot be imposed by I&IT or senior managers. They need to emerge from a governance structure that is representative, credible and legitimate,” Dr. Berman added. The group will be chaired by Dr. Ortiz, with Dr. Berman as vice chair. The remainder of the Executive Committee consists of five faculty representatives, two Deans, a staff member, the Senate Chair and representatives from the Foundation and ASI. The first meeting will be in late spring.
A new e-mail policy set to
begin in Summer Quarter will revolutionize how the university communicates with
its students. Currently, students are being notified that the university will
communicate with them via e-mail. Previously “snail mail” was used
for all written notifications to students. “We are evolving
electronically as a university,” says Gary E. Fredericksen, Interim Vice
President of Student Affairs. The new policy not only helps catapult the
university further into its technology-driven development, but it also
decreases mailing expenses.
The Telecommunications Infrastructure Initiative (TII) Project, also known as “ITRP” (Infrastructure Terminal Resources Project), continues at full speed. We have completed installing new voice and data cable and have shifted most telephone, fax and modem lines to the new wiring. We are currently installing new network gear and shifting your connections to new, improved wiring with much faster access. We are working with each group to make your transition orderly. So far, we have shifted Buildings 5, 6, 30, 79, 91 and 111 to the faster network and are in the process of moving occupants of Buildings 1 and 8. We’re currently finalizing remaining building plans with the CSU for this important project. A key element in our plan is to install scores of wireless classrooms around campus. If you have any questions on the TII data cutover, contact Susan Bowers at (909) 979-6344 or sbowers@csupomona.edu.
I&IT welcomes Dr. J. Curtis Clark as our new campus web
coordinator. Dr. Clark, a professor in the Biological Sciences department, is
currently editing the Cal Poly Pomona web pages, updating them to the latest
links and information. Curtis is available also to faculty for consulting on
how to use the web in teachings.
For more, contact Dr. Clark at jcclark@csupomona.edu or in his office in Studio Six (98-C6-13) or (909) 979-6371.
Our campus participated in National Internet2 Day in a big way recently. Several faculty and staff members took advantage of the day-long activities to enhance learning and research through our Internet2 membership. Participants enjoyed the video streams from across the country from other participating Internet2 universities. A highlight was a live presentation by Dr. Samir Chatterjee. The associate professor at Claremont Graduate University’s School of Information Science demonstrated a lab-developed Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) solution and discussed VOIP security. What is Internet2? It is a consortium led by 205 universities partnering with industry and government to develop advanced network applications and technologies, accelerating the creation of tomorrow's Internet. As an Internet2 member institution, we have access to its enhanced network (Abilene) and to the group’s brainpower, equipment and contacts. Faculty participants included Dr. Melissa Aaron (English/Foreign Language); Dr. Samir Anz (Chemistry); Dr. Behrouz Aslani (Technology and Operations Management); Dr. Christina Dehler (Education); Dr. Ruth Guthrie (Computer Information Systems); Dr. John Karayan (Accounting); David Kopplin (Music); Dr. Shahnaz Lotfipour (Education); Dr. Nancy Prince-Cohen (Education); Dr. Laurie Shrage (Philosophy); Don St. Hilaire (Hospitality Management); and Dr. Ian Stewart (Faculty Center for Professional Development). Several staffers also participated, including Lisa Rotunni (College of Engineering) and I&IT staff members. For added information on the day’s activities see: http://www.csupomona.edu/iit/internet2/.

Blackboard enables instructors to communicate a whole new way with their students, even after class is over. This learning management system allows faculty to conduct classes solely on-line or serves as a beneficial site for classes that meet on campus. Instructors can post announcements, notes and course syllabi. Discussion boards and class groups can be set up through Blackboard. Instructors can also host a virtual classroom, which allows all students to sign on and chat on-line for a class discussion. Students can also access their grades and take timed exams and quizzes posted by their instructors. Blackboard is currently being used to host the campus-wide discussions of the 2004-2005 budget. As a reminder, faculty may still use WebCT, another learning management application. For more information on Blackboard and its uses, check out http://blackboard.csupomona.edu.
If you are interested in using Blackboard, contact Dr. David Levin (our new Learning Director, noted above) at (909) 979-6304.
The recent outbreaks of
viruses and worms is a reminder of how vulnerable we all are. I&IT Systems
has tightened up the mail gateways to help protect us. How do you protect your
computer and those of others? Keep up-to-date on the latest Windows patches.
These are offered directly from Microsoft (http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp).
Also, you should stay current on your virus definitions. For faculty and staff,
we have enterprise-wide licenses for Norton and McAfee virus protection
applications that you can download.
