I&IT KEEPS CAL POLY POMONA “CONNECT-ED” – I&IT played a major role in the university’s first test of the new Safety Alert System in May. Several I&IT staff members assured students, faculty, staff and parents were correctly sent a test message. In an actual campus emergency, the new alert application notifies the campus community and provides safety advice. Making the test run like clockwork was a large I&IT contingent. It included Susan Reese, Mauricio Calderon, Tim Raymond, Curtis Clark, Jerry Lerma and the Help Desk staff.

SECURING SENSITIVE INFORMATION – A major, continuing division initiative has been tightened data security. I&IT has implemented secure passwords for students, faculty and staff. The project has been so successful that more than 85% of the university community was able to change their BroncoDirect passwords in less than five months. Leading the project is our Information Security Officer, Al Arboleda. Providing key support are Tim Raymond, Mauricio Calderón, Debra Brum, Curtis Clark, Joe Matsumoto, Dave Drivdahl, Chris Crudo, Paul Henson, Denny Mosier, Candie McDougall, Janet Rice and Marcy Gates. Another part of the initiative involved servers. The IT Governance Committee approved Al’s proposal to tighten security on all university desktops and servers. Still another important security project has been the elimination of insecure communications protocols in emails and other data transmissions.

EPORTFOLIO PILOT – I&IT’s Learning team is working with the College of Engineering piloting electronic portfolios. An “ePortfolio” is a collection of electronic evidence assembled and managed by a user that demonstrates a type of learning record that provides evidence of achievement. I&IT is testing ePortfolio by providing first-year students in two classes with access to the Blackboard ePortfolio tool. A decision on whether to expand the pilot is expected this summer. Leading the project is I&IT’s Pauline Salim.

COMMENCEMENT STREAMED WORLDWIDE – Once again, a massive worldwide audience has viewed our commencement team’s work. As of the end of June, our commencement site received 25,416 streaming video downloads. Viewers in 91 countries, 47 states and seven Canadian provinces tuned in to the graduation ceremonies. The international viewer split was 71% from North America, 12.74% from Western Europe, 4.47% from Asia, 2.71% each from Eastern Europe and South America and 5.66% from other continents. I&IT’s commencement team included Rick Cass, Terry Hogan, Imran Hamid, Trevor Henderson and Bo Yeun Soh. Among the more than 3,700 graduating students was Candie McDougall, who was congratulated on stage by President Michael Ortiz and Debra Brum, I&IT vice president.

SMARTER CLASSROOMS – I&IT continues to modernize the campus’ classrooms. Four classrooms in the newly named Collins College of Hospitality Management were upgraded in spring. This brings the total remodeled through the Learning Centered Technology Initiative to 85 classrooms. This summer, I&IT is scheduled to upgrade 21 classrooms. Leading the project is I&IT’s Heather Fannin, with help from our own Jovito Barrantes and Terry Simmons and Glenn Miller from Facilities.

ACCESSIBILITY TEAM BUSY – Following a series of spring workshops on the JAWS screen reader, the accessibility team has a busy summer planned. The team will work on captioning videos and review technology vendors’ Voluntary Product Accessibility Templates (VPATs). VPATs are a vendor’s testament that their products are accessible to the disabled. The active summer team includes Carol Heins-Gonzales and Debra Brum from I&IT, along with Cathy Schmitt Whitaker, Adam Navarro, Debra Garr and Carmen Munoz-Silva.
