INTRANET REPLACEMENT IN LAST LAPS
The long-running Intranet replacement project is heading into its final laps. Most of the components are completed and installed, with only file sharing and web space development left. These last two upgraded services will be introduced to users in the coming months. The campus Intranet combines email, file storage, web service, identity management, authentication, authorization and supporting services. Most of the Intranet services replaced to date have no noticeable appearance differences for end-users. The last two services will see noticeable user changes. Paul Henson, Joe Matsumoto, Heath Caldwell, Brian DeWolf and Curtis Clark, among others, are working diligently on the file and web space changes. Stay tuned for announcements to the campus and new eHelp pages for specifics.
I&IT and the Faculty Center for Professional Development are rolling out iClickers as the student response system of choice. iClickers were selected after a product “bake off” with two competitive systems. With iClickers, professors can get immediate responses from students to determine how well students are learning class materials. The iClickers are also used for tests and compiling class attendance. Daniel Smith is leading the rollout, with help from April McKettrick and Trevor Henderson.
The applications team is busy upgrading PeopleSoft Finance to version 9.0, with production scheduled for late February. The Data Base Administrators worked the database issues. Abel Zamora and Saraswathi Kumathi retrofitted more than 500 queries. Marvin Campbell has taken the lead on the web tools project, which involves upgrading the current version of FWT, built on PERL scripts and web-cgis, to a version built on PeopleSoft development tools. With this upgrade, FWT will reside completely within PeopleSoft and provide greater supportability. I&IT Applications’ staff working on FWT are Saraswathi and Marvin while Stephanie Doda and Rita Haerr are providing key testing.
Another important project is the upgrade of the Hyperion data-reporting tool to its latest version, 9.3. This will fix a major issue with Hyperion that does not delete files from the operating system after they have been deleted from within Hyperion, causing unneeded data storage on servers. The team includes Dave Drivdahl (hardware), Steve Ayon (who created a dashboard template that met accessibility requirements) and Diane Carter and Chris Crudo, who will finalize the production environment.
I&IT has taken a lead role in securing the university’s data. Working with key committees such as IT Governance, Al Arboleda, I&IT Information Security Officer, has led the adoption of key procedures. These include standards for more secure desktops and servers, along with an Information Classification and Handling Standard. We also have an official security program. These documents are available for viewing in Blackboard.
