WHERE DID ALL THE SPAM GO? – Into quarantine “buckets.” Thanks to the work of the Windows email crew (Dave Drivdahl, Luke Lanting and Chris Crudo) and our chief Unix wizard (Paul Henson) students, faculty and staff are seeing considerably less spam in their email in-boxes. I&IT has implemented the IronPort spam filtering solution, which marks suspected spam and sends it to each user’s quarantine folder. Every Monday users get a message from the IronPort software, notifying them of the email messages sent to the folder and asking them if they want to retrieve any of those messages marked as spam to delete. Users have raved about the new spam blocker and there have been less email spam calls to our Cal Poly Pomona Help Desk. For details on how Ironport works, see spam .

NEW LOOK POLYCENTRIC  – Web Development, led by Curtis Clark, is rolling out a new-look Polycentric. The latest version is designed for “Web 2.0,” using graphic elements liberally and a modern content flow. Our university’s daily electronic newsletter, located at polycentric, will be easier to navigate and offer such Web 2.0 features as interactive user comments.

OLD INTRANET ON THE WAY OUT – The latest happenings here include the phase-out of the old DFS file and web page sharing and storage with replacement by the new ZFS service. Users with files and web pages on the DFS shares have been asked to start moving their data using an application developed by I&IT. Users who have not moved by mid-October will receive an email message from I&IT with final shutdown of the DFS service by early 2010. Paul Henson and Heath Caldwell are handling the coordination with help from I&IT Web Development. For details see zfs.

EMAIL HOSTING OFF CAMPUS– As part of a recommendation from the IT Governance Committee, I&IT is exploring options that would host email off campus. As a first step alumni “email for life” has been shifted to Microsoft. The next step, currently in progress, is analyzing how and where student email might reside. Possibilities include Microsoft and Google. Leading this project is Dave Drivdahl, with management from Joe Matsumoto. A multi-division team in the IT Governance Standards & Support sub-committee of IT Governance has endorsed the idea of exploring hosting student and alumni email off site.

BLACKBOARD 9 MOVING FORWARD – I&IT continues to introduce Blackboard 9 to the campus. This fall some 120 courses are being taught using the new version of our Learning Management System. Winter of 2010 will be a big push to move the majority of classes to the latest version with a phase-out of our currently used version, Blackboard 7, occurring at the start of Spring Quarter. This project is being led by I&IT Learning, with help from Applications, Systems and Support. Included on the team are Hye Ok Park, Pauline Salim, Bo Soh, Bedan Kamau, Mauricio Calderon, Beverly Geuting, Betty Wu, Dave Drivdahl, Dave Lyon, Hari Singh, Joe Matsumoto and Stephanie Doda.

TAKING OVER SUPPORT OF COLLINS, CEIS – I&IT has assumed all technical support for the Collins College of Hospitality Management and the College of Education and Integrative Studies (CEIS). End-users seeking assistance in these two colleges now call the Cal Poly Pomona Help Desk (6776), where technicians in I&IT Support are assigned each support request, escalating to other I&IT units as appropriate. I&IT Systems is assuming support of the servers and Projects & Services is supporting Labs in both colleges. This is the third unit that I&IT has assumed A to Z technical support following University Advancement.

WEB HELP DESK CAMPUS ROLLOUT – I&IT’s Cal Poly Pomona Help Desk in 1-100 is now taking user requests directly from end-users through its ticket tracking application. The customized version of Web Help Desk (WHD) was developed by a team led by Denny Mosier, Candie McDougall, Dave Drivdahl, Joe Matsumoto, Curtis Clark and Mauricio Calderon. Technical staff members involved in the project included I&IT employees from Support, Systems, Web Development and Applications. This culminates a three-year project to replace the old HelpLine ticketing application. Using WHD for more than a year, I&IT has serviced more than 15,000 individual technical support requests.

GOOGLE ANALYTICS INTRODUCED TO CPP WEB – I&IT Web Development is adopting Google Analytics as a way to analyze the university’s web traffic. The software is a free web analytics tool offering detailed visitor statistics. The tool can be used to track all the usual site activities: visits, page views, pages per visit, bounce rates and average time on site.

EORIENTATION FOR MILITARY VETERANS – I&IT is part of an important initiative to help returning military service personnel to adapt to university life. I&IT Learning is working with Student Affairs to create an eOrientation program for veterans. I&IT Learning is developing a Blackboard eOrientation course with six modules:

  • Transition to Cal Poly Pomona
  •  Academic Success
  • University Business
  • Campus Technology
  • Getting the Most out of College
  • Knowing Your Resources.

A project team has been formed and course design has started. A test version of the first module has been presented to a multi-division committee. I&IT Learning’s project team includes Karen Brzoska, Pauline Salim and Jason Beers. The service is expected to be launched in January of 2010.

PRINT MANAGEMENT FOR STUDENTS – I&IT Projects & Services will be implementing a new print management service for I&IT computer labs. The Pharos application will allow students to use their Bronco Cards (or if they do not have their cards, they can pay for printing with cash) at a Kiosk that will be located in the Computing Commons in Building 98 or the Campus Center Computer Lab in Building 97. This project is intended to replace our manual system of collecting money as payment for printouts and copies for students. Heading the project is Dennis Tilford with management from Susan Reese.

SERVICE AWARDS – I&IT was well represented at the annual service awards ceremony during the Fall Commencement. Awardees for their years of university service included Jerry Lerma (30 years), JoAnn Karns (25), Stephanie Doda (20), Shirley Holder and Betty Wu (15) and Dave Drivdahl and Cassandra Reyes (10).
