Instruction Mode Definitions

Face-to-Face

The mode in which a course meets face-to-face for instruction and exams in a regularly scheduled space and pattern based on course contact-hours standards. Information may be provided on-line for the course but on-line activity does not replace weekly course time.

Hybrid

The mode in which some of the standard course contact hours are replaced by time on-line, but which still meets face-to-face at times during the quarter for instruction, orientation and/or exams.

On-line

The mode in which all instructional contact hours are replaced by time on-line, but which may meet face-to-face for a single orientation and for one or more exams.

Scheduling Principles
  1. Courses are scheduled into space only as needed for face-to-face meetings.
  2. Courses are scheduled so that students’ schedules are blocked only as needed for face-to-face meetings.
  3. Hybrid and on-line courses are entered into PeopleSoft in a standard way for all disciplines.
Advertising Principles
  1. Students are able to know in what modes courses are available: e.g. is a course always offered on-line or hybrid, offered face-to-face with on-line or hybrid as options, or always offered face-to-face.
  2. Students are able to make an informed choice about which mode would best serve their learning needs.
  3. Students are able to search for on-line or hybrid courses by type.
  4. Class schedule clearly displays mode of instruction in consistent and easily understood format.
  5. Class schedule clearly displays locations and times for all course meetings in consistent and easily understood format.
Schedule Data Entry Specifications

All courses appear in the Schedule of Classes in PeopleSoft.

Hybrid courses
  • Are scheduled for the meeting dates and times they need, which will be less than the total standard contact hours for a face-to-face section of the same course.
  • Have explanatory information entered in the Notes field of the Schedule of Classes.

Standard note would read as follows:

  • "Hybrid course with both online and classroom meetings. Contact (dept or name, phone) for more information."
On-line courses
  • Have their Schedule of Classes meeting time and room listed as TBA.
    • Note: Under this method, on-line courses NEVER block the student’s schedule.
  • Have their meetings entered in the Event Schedule in PeopleSoft.
  • Have all the details of meeting times and places entered in the Notes field of the Schedule of Classes.

Standard note would be composed of the following elements, as applicable:

  1. Course entirely online.
  2. Required orientation meeting: (date, time, location)
    - or -
Students must attend one of the following orientation meetings: (each date, time, location)
