Request for Proposals

This is a Request for Proposals for the 2009 Faculty Summer Institute for Online and Hybrid Course Development. Following the success of the three Summer & Winter Institute sessions held in June, July, and December 2009 and attended by 60+ faculty members, I&IT Learning will be offering additional opportunities during the Summer of 2009. A week-long faculty development program, conducted by I&IT Learning with participation from the University Library, the Faculty Center for Professional Development, and Accessible Technology Initiative (ATI), provides resources to faculty for redesigning classroom-based courses into online or hybrid courses. Faculty selected to participate in the Institute will receive a stipend, access to technology resources and instructional design support. All courses must be approved, or submitted for approval, for academic credit and scheduled to be offered in the 2009-2010 or 2010-2011 academic years.

The Summer Institute takes a comprehensive and systematic approach to the integration of instructional technologies into teaching and learning with sound pedagogy. The core of the Institute is an immersive, week-long series of in-depth workshops, technology skills sessions, hands-on project work, and group discussions. Participants should expect to spend additional time in post-workshop learning community meetings, developing their courses and consulting with I&IT Learning staff. Institute faculty are required to commit to teaching the online or hybrid course at least once during the 2009-2010 or 2011 academic years. Institute faculty are also encouraged to participate in mentoring activities, panel discussions, or presentations that showcase the results of their work.

Faculty will be required to:

Upon completion of the Institute and the course development work*, participating faculty will receive a $1,500 stipend, or $1,500 allocation for travel and/or supplies and/or student assistants.

*Completed courses shall be submitted for review by our team of instructional designers; the faculty member will be provided a follow-up meeting to review recommendations. Please expect a minimum of two weeks’ turn-around times for course reviews once the final version of the course has been submitted for review.

Note: The Institute is designed for advanced users of Blackboard. Applicant must have attended the Monthly 4-hour workshop, Introduction to Online Teaching & Blackboard Startup, any other workshops such as Blackboard Start-up, or have experience teaching online with Blackboard or any Learning Management System.
