What:
- Equip classrooms with appropriate presentation technology and network connectivity. The goal is to ensure that faculty have access to classrooms with technology that supports student learning and instruction.
- Provide all full time tenured and tenure-track faculty with laptop computers. The goal is to ensure that faculty will have the same computing environment – in the office, in the classroom, in the lab, at home, and on the road.
- Unanimously endorsed by the IT Governance Committee
- Funded through lottery funds.
When:
- Currently one-third of our classrooms are equipped with presentation technology. The initiative will result in these and other learning spaces being equipped with modern learning technology.
- The first laptops will be distributed in Spring 2005. By Fall 2006 all eligible faculty desiring a laptop will have one.
Faculty Input:
- In an effort to ensure that the program meets the needs of the faculty, I&IT solicited input through faculty meetings, discussions with deans and chairs, and a faculty survey.
- Our initial findings indicate that the minimum baseline Enhanced Classroom will include:
- A PC computer
- Laptop connection
- Network and internet connection
- Ceiling-mounted projector
- Motorized screen
- Combination DVD/CD/VCR player
- Document camera
- Speakers with amplification
- Podium with an integrated control panel
- Our initial findings on laptops indicate the following:
- In addition to laptops, faculty should receive, docking stations, monitors, keyboards, mouse, security locks, tote bags
- Network storage will be available to enable faculty to back up their data as well as keep data in a secure environment
- A tiered support structure is needed to ensure that faculty receive adequate and appropriate support for their laptops and applications.
- An inventory system will be implemented.
