RECRUITMENT

Attention New Freshmen and Interested Students!

The Interfraternity Council will be holding its semi-annual Formal Rush during the first full week of school. All eight fraternities will have informational booths set up and will be hosting events during the evenings. Please visit as many of these tables and events as you can and find out which group is your best match. The most important thing is to join some fraternity because the benefits you will receive from membership will be equally great regardless of which chapter you choose. You will only need to be yourself to determine with which group of men you best identify, because it will be with those men that you will have the most fun.

What is RUSH?

Rush is a week long event starting on Monday and ending on Tuesday of the following week with "Bid Day." Rush is a time for you to experience a litle taste of fraternity life and find a group of men with whom you can become friends. It can be a real experience for everyone involved and for you the "rushee." Every formal rush period, each fraternity participates in Rush and selects quality men for their respective fraternities. It is not a "coolness" or popularity contest. It is a chance for you to become part of a society that promotes academics, community service, and brotherhood. Most everyone who rushes will find a group of men that best represents their ideals and personalities and yet have the diversification that each and every fraternity on our campus represents.

Rush Events

The first event to both Fall and Spring Formal Rush is the Interfraternity Council sponsored info night. This is where you will learn about the week to follow and the rushing process. This is a great opportunity for you to learn more about how being in a fraternity, especially at Cal Poly, is beneficial. Every fraternity participating in formal rush will hold events throughout the week. As a rushee, you must consider all 8 fraternities and decide which events you would like to attend that night. During the day, each participating fraternity will have an info booth located somewhere on campus so that you can meet the gentlemen before deciding to attend their event. Try to participate in as many events as possible and get to know the men on a one to one basis. Be sure to score some free food and quality entertainment in the process! The fraternities spare no expense for you future leaders!

Invite Dinners

Towards the end of formal rush, most fraternities hold an invite only dinner. If you were not invited to a dinner, that does not necessarily mean that you are not wanted by the fraternity and it is not too late to get a "bid" from that fraternity. Unless otherwise stated, invite dinners are usually a formal event (i.e., shirt and tie - maybe a jacket).

Getting a Bid

Bid day is the Tuesday following rush week. From the hours of 12-1, the University has what is called "university hour," where no classes are held and students socialize, etc. During University hour on this day, you are invited to the greek affairs office in the stables (specific instructions will be explained by the individual chapters) where a "bid" may or may not await you from a fraternity. More than one fraternity may extend you a bid. In which case, you must decide which one to pick up, which indicates which fraternity you would like to pledge.

Good luck on a successful rush! Be sure to ask lots of questions!
