Medical

Medical coverage for eligible CSU employees is provided through the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) and is governed by the provisions of the Public Employees’ Medical and Hospital Care Act (PEMHCA).

Premiums

The employer pays a substantial amount towards the monthly premium charged by the medical plan. Rates are subject to change through collective bargaining. See the tables listed below for the monthly employer contribution and the monthly employee share of the premiums for calendar year 2007 medical plan enrollments.

Tax Advantage Premium Plan (TAPP) 

Employees enrolling in a medical plan through their CSU employment are automatically enrolled in TAPP. TAPP provides for an employee’s medical plan premium contribution to be deducted from their salary before taxes are calculated and converts their deduction to a tax-free expense. TAPP participation continues to be automatic unless cancelled by the employee during Open Enrollment. There is a 17 cent per month service charge required by the State Controller’s Office which is automatically payroll deducted.

Note: TAPP has no impact on an employee’s retirement deductions, nor on any other CSU-paid benefit. However, depending on an employee’s salary, their Social Security benefits at retirement may be reduced slightly, because they have paid Social Security taxes on a lower wage.
