Dr. Kobluk is the Director of Equine Sciences in
the College of Agriculture at California State Polytechnic University.
After graduating with his DVM in 1978, Dr. Kobluk
was an intern at Cornell University for one year. Subsequent to
this, he spent five years in private practice involving mostly
horses but also some cattle. He then continued his training at
Ontario Veterinary College with a residency in surgery. After
completing the residency, he accepted faculty/surgeon position
at the University of Minnesota where he became board certified
in 1990. While at the University of Minnesota, he served various
administrative functions such as Director of Equine Services,
Chair of Faculty Council and the University Senate. In 1996 he
accepted the position of Director of Equine Sciences at Cal Poly
Pomona.
Dr. Kobluk's experience in teaching revolves around
the practice of veterinary surgery. He has taught surgery to both
professional students in the DVM program at the University of
Minnesota and to undergraduate students at Cal Poly Pomona. He
has a special emphasis in diseases of the musculoskeletal system.
He has lectured in equine science on basic management courses
and equine herd health. In the Animal Health Technology program,
he teaches Advanced Surgical and Anesthetic techniques as well
as Veterinary Ethics, the Language and the Law. In the College
of Agriculture he has taught courses on the animal industries.
Dr. Kobluk's research interests revolve around the
equine athlete. His research has included studies on locomotion,
the epidemiology of musculoskeletal disease in race horses, and
topics in farrier science. In addition, he has published articles
on surgical techniques. Dr. Kobluk has been the principle investigator
on projects funded close to $500,000 at the University of Minnesota,
Ontario Veterinary College and Cal Poly Pomona. Dr. Kobluk has
authored approximately 25 scientific publications in referred
journals and an additional 14 in reviewed journals and proceedings.
He is the lead author in the textbook "The Horse, Diseases
and Clinical Management", Vol. 1 & 2 by W. B. Saunders
1995. In addition he has authored four other textbook chapters.
Dr. Kobluk has presented approximately 40 scientific presentations
at conferences or programs on his research. In addition, he has
presented in excess of 50 extension and continuing education programs.
Dr. Kobluk has been awarded numerous scholarships
including the Don Davis Memorial Fellowship, the Synthes Fellowship,
the agricultural honors scholarship. In addition, he was named
to Who's Who in Veterinary Science and Medicine and is a sponsor
member for the Morris Animal Foundation as a result of his research
in musculoskeletal injury in race horses. He is a member of the
alumni associations of the University of Calgary, University of
Guelph, and University of Saskatchewan. Dr. Kobluk has served
on over 30 departmental or collegiate committees and six university
based committees, including the Faculty Senate at the University
of Minnesota from 1989-1992. He has served as a scientific program
chair for the American Association of Equine Practitioners and
the Veterinary Orthopedic Society. He has served on the Board
of Directors of the Veterinary Orthopedic Society and various
committees for the American Association of Equine Practitioners
including Research Committee, Animal Welfare Committee, and Sports
Medicine Committee and scientific program committee. Dr. Kobluk
is a reviewer for five industry journals and sits on the Advisory
Board for the Journal of Veterinary Science. In addition, he has
been a member of the National Cutting Horse Association for 20
years and served as a judge for three of those years. He is also
a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and competes
in the team roping event.
