Human Nutrition & Food Science

A Bachelor of Science degree with a major in foods and nutrition prepares students for challenging and rewarding careers and provides a strong academic background for graduate study and research.

The effect of nutrition on health promotion and disease prevention, as well as food safety, is of much national concern. Four of the top ten causes of death in U.S. adults are linked to diet.

Southern California is a major food industry center as well as a leader in public health institutions . There are many opportunities for internships, field trips, guest speakers, and jobs for our students.

Cal Poly Pomona is a university founded on the principle of "learn by doing."

The curriculum, facilities, and faculty reflect a commitment to a strong, up-to-date, science-based program that provides the types of skills and knowledge needed by graduates to meet professional goals.

The mission of the Human Nutrition & Food Science Department is to work in collaboration with industry, alumni, and community to provide quality ducation to students in order to prepare competent, ethical graduates for a variety of careers.The vision is that graduates will significantly impact on the health and well-being of members of society.

Foods and nutrition majors select a career option to gain experience in technological skills, problem solving, communication skills, interpersonal relations, and organizational and leadership competencies as applied to the areas of dietetics, foods in business, industry, education, and food sciences. Transfer, reentry, culturally diverse, and male students are welcomed.

The Human Nutrition & Food Science Department offers a variety of programs

High school students planning to major in foods and nutrition are advised to build a background in foods, chemistry, mathematics, and biology. Community college students should concentrate on chemistry (including organic), biology (including microbiology), foods, nutrition, statistics, communication skills and general education.
