Dr. Gibbons is a professor of horticulture in the
College of Agriculture at California State Polytechnic University,
Pomona. After receiving his BS degree, he served 3 years in the
U.S. Army as a transportation officer. He then taught junior high
school science for 3 years. He returned to school and upon receiving
his Ph.D., accepted a teaching/research faculty position in the
Department of Horticulture and Forestry at Kansas State University.
In 1985, Dr. Gibbons applied for and was appointed as the Chair
of the Ornamental Horticulture Department at California State
Polytechnic University at Pomona. He remained in this position
until 1991. He currently holds a 3/4 time teaching position and
a 1/4 time appointment as the Faculty Athletics Representative
for the University.
Ornamental Horticulture: Landscape Plant Materials,
Landscape Horticulture Practices and Principles, Plant Propagation,
Plant Tissue Culture, Horticultural Therapy, Undergraduate Seminar.
Dr. Gibbons research interests are in the areas
of plant propagation and horticultural therapy. His Ph.D. dissertation
involved the overwintering of containerized plants in cold climes
and included a scanning electron microscopic examination of the
foliage surface. He also has extensive training in light and transmission
electron microscopy. He is currently working with a graduate student
doing work in the micropropagation of a California Native, which
has potential value as a landscape plant. His work in horticultural
therapy includes extensive experience working in a psychiatric
institution for forensic and civil committed patients.
Dr. Gibbons has received numerous awards for his
teaching, academic advising and other professional endeavors.
For example, during his tenure in the College of Agriculture at
Kansas State University, he was named Outstanding Teacher and
Outstanding Advisor for the year in the College of Agriculture.
Soon after his arrival at Cal Poly Pomona, he applied for and
received a competitive grant to set up a tissue culture laboratory
for teaching and research. He also studied under Dr. Toshio Murashige
at the University of California, Davis to develop his skills in
the area of plant tissue culture. One of Dr. Gibbons' students
earned the "Outstanding Horticulture Student in North America
Award" presented by the American Society of Horticultural
Science. He has served on many committees and boards throughout
his professional career both with the university community and
industry. He is presently a board member of the American Horticultural
Therapy Association.
