Dr. Fernandez is an Assistant Professor in the Department
of Animal and Veterinary Sciences. Prior to joining the faculty
at Cal Poly he was a post-doctoral fellow at the Wisconsin Regional
Primate Research Center in Madison, WI where he studied the neuroendocrine
mechanisms of growth and puberty in rhesus monkeys. Dr. Fernandez
served as a meat inspector in a beef slaughter plant, and taught
at both the high school and middle school levels after graduating
with his BS.
Dr. Fernandez teaches courses in beef cattle management,
reproductive physiology, introductory animal agriculture, and
agricultural biotechnology.
Dr. Fernandez has conducted research into the neural
and endocrine mechanisms controlling growth and reproduction in
monkeys and beef cattle. Currently, his interests focus on the
neurotransmitter systems that control the release of hypothalamic
releasing hormones that act on the pituitary to induce growth
and puberty.
Dr. Fernandez is a member of the American Society
of Animal Science, American Association for the Advancement of
Science, Society for Neuroscience, and the Endocrine Society.
Dr. Fernandez has presented the results of 7 scientific experiments
at national meetings and has published 3 scientific papers with
an additional 5 papers currently being prepared for publication.
Dr. Fernandez was awarded the Edward L. Moody Memorial
Scholarship while attending Montana State University in 1992,
and he was inducted into Gamma Sigma Delta, the Honor Society
of Agriculture in 1995 while at the University of Kentucky. He
was a National Institutes of Health Predoctoral Trainee from 1996
to 1997 and a National Institutes of Health Post-doctoral Fellow
from 1997 to 1999.
