Freshman Application Essay Questions

While the freshmen application website is under development, you can start drafting essay responses for the application.

Essay Instructions:

The essays are the single most important part of the application to Honors.  Essays should be:

  • Insightful -- your essay reveals that you are able to think carefully and reflectively about your learning, interactions and experiences
  • Interesting -- no matter how "small" your topic may seem, you have shown that it is significant
  • Complete and well-crafted -- your essay has a beginning, middle, and end; a short essay is not simply a truncated long essay.
  • Correct in grammar, spelling, and mechanics in standard written English

Essay Questions:

  1. Briefly describe a significant experience, achievement, risk you have taken, or ethical dilemma you have faced. Then, in more detail, evaluate this event's influence on you, your choices or your path from childhood to young adulthood. In other words, what did you learn from this experience and how did it influence your actions?
  2. Identify a current issue of national or international concern. Discuss, in some detail, the effects of this issue on your immediate (family, neighborhood, ethnic group, town, state, etc.) community.
  3. Outside of academics, what is the activity that you are most committed to? Describe the reasons for your involvement in this activity and the contributions you have made to others due to this activity.
