Biography:
Dr. Kessler joined the Department of Human Nutrition and Food Science at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona in September, 2007 as an Assistant Professor. She has been a Registered Dietitian since 1987. Prior to joining the faculty at Cal Poly, Dr. Kessler lived and worked in four countries while accompanying her husband in the Foreign Service. She served as Adjunct Faculty from 2003-2006 at the Institute of Nutrition of the University of Vienna in Vienna, Austria. From 2000-2003, she was an Assistant Professor at Intercollege in Larnaca, Cyprus. From 1998-2000, she served as the Director of Health Education at King Fahd Hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. From 1996-1998, she was back in the US as an Assistant Professor at Morgan State University in Maryland and prior to that she was the Dean of Students at the American College in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. She began her career in Austin, Texas in 1987 as the Nutrition Education Coordinator at the University of Texas, Student Health Center.
Teaching Areas/Expertise:
Dr. Kessler’s passions are Community Nutrition and Nutrition Education. She has also taught Health Education, Health Communication, Research Methodology, Women’s Health and Nutrition.
Research Areas/Expertise
Dr. Kessler has published and worked extensively in the promotion of breastfeeding; as well as in the prevention of eating disorders. Her interest areas are community nutrition and nutrition education. Currently she is working on: 1. improving access to Food Stamps; 2. evaluating nutrition education programs for children; 3. evaluating service learning as an approach to teaching community nutrition and 4. the development of a Spanish language nutrition curriculum.
Awards/Recognition/Professional Activity:
Dr. Kessler is a member of the Orange County, California and American Dietetic Associations, the American Public Health Association and the Society for Nutrition Education. She has been a reviewer for the American Journal of Health Education since 2002.
She received the Journal of Human Lactation’s Award for Most Useful Article in 1995. She received the Kruse Award for Excellence in Public Health Nutrition in 1993 and was the Young Dietitian of the Year in Texas in 1990.
