September 16 & 17, 2000 MINUTES

1. Discussion of financial matters pertaining to the annual meeting report from each member society on society's willingness to defray expense of attending
   1. We still don't know if SIAM provides financial support
   2. AWM does provide some, but it is not clear how this is determined for different reps.
2. Reports on Data
   1. The MAA is still not collecting the data according to the Resolution adopted by the Board of Governors in January 1996. The data it does collect has rarely been published in the Focus. Flahive and Segal wil contact the Focus editor about publishing the data that is available.
   2. Although there has been an improvement in the participation of women in the AMS Special Sessions, the participation is still low. We will recommend a partial solution to the AMS Council.
   3. We need to obtain information about data collection, and publication of this data, from the other member societies. Lockhart and Almgren will look into the data that is available from SIAM.
3. Summary of Report in AWM July-August 2000 newsletter on ``Proportions of Women Faculty and Students in the Mathematical Sciences: A Trend Analysis by Institutional Group'' presented by Dianne Herrmann. She will attempt to find out the number of women in tenured positions by rank at Group I, II, and III institutions. ?
4. Guidelines for meeting organizers
   Segal will again attempt to obtain this information from the MAA. Lockhart and Almgren will contact SIAM to see what guidelines they have, and Ratcliff will contact the AMS.
5. JCW Charge
   Since the AMS did not agree to our proposed revision of the charge. We will work on a new revision, and submit it for approval of all member societies.
6. NSF funding AWM representative Ratcliff reported that NSF seems to be reducing its funding of programs for women and minorities. There is concern that other federal agencies will follow NSF's ``lead''.
7. January 2001 meeting in New Orleans The committee will meet in New Orleans. We prefer to meet on Thursday or Friday at lunch time.
