Let's Compare=20 Air

What is carbon dioxide?
The = dictionary defines=20 carbon dioxide as
a = colorless,=20 odorless, incombustible gas, CO2, formed=20 during respiration, combustion, and organic decomposition and used in = food=20 refrigeration, carbonated beverages, inert atmospheres, fire = extinguishers, and=20 aerosols. Also called carbonic = acid=20 gas.

In this experiment, = you will=20 be able to find out about how much carbon dioxide there is in your own=20 respiratory actions, compared to that in the atmosphere, and also = compared to=20 that in carbon dioxide created chemically.

Materials:

red = cabbage=20 leaves
3/4 cups water
plastic zip-lock baggies
4 clear plastic=20 cups
1 large round balloon
1 plastic soda or water = bottle
baking=20 soda
vinegar
straws
measuring cup
funnel

Procedure:
1. 
You have to begin by preapring the = indicator=20 solution. This solution will let you know how much Carbon Dioxide there = is in=20 your different sources. To do this, tear several leaves off of a head of = red=20 cabbage.  Place the cabbage into a zip-lock baggie and add 3/4 cup = warm=20 water. Massage the baggie until the juices of the cabbage change the = water into=20 a light bluish color.  Once desired color is obtained, pour equal = amounts=20 of the solution into four cups.

2.=20
Inflate=20 and deflate a balloon  a couple of times so it becomes flexible. = Then use a=20 funnel to put about 1/4 cup of baking soda into the balloon.  Using = a=20 partner, fill the plastic bottle with about 1/4 cup of vinegar. Place = the end of=20 the balloon over the mouth of the bottle, but do not pour the vinegar = into the=20 bottle!!!

3. Lift the = bottom of=20 the balloon so the vinegar pous into the bottle and mixes with the = baking soda.=20 As the vinegar and baking soda will bubble, swish the bottle around in = swirls to=20 mix them more and to get the most air possible into your balloon. =

4. =20
After the=20 balloon has inflated as much as possible, carefully twist the bottom of = the=20 balloon slowly, to shut the hole where air might escape. Then pull the = balloon=20 off of the bottle without letting any CO2 escape. Have your partner hold = the=20 balloon closed until the last step.

5.=20 Next, open a baggie and swirl it around in the air. Try to get as = much=20 surrounding air in the baggie as possible. Then seal it tightly. Open = one end of=20 the baggie very carefully, just enough to slide a straw into it. Place = the other=20 end of the straw into one of the indicator cups and push the air into = the cup.=20 Observe what happens to the indicator solution.

Put a straw in your mouth and blow into = the second=20 indicator cup. Observe what happens to the indicator = solution.

7. Finally, with your partner's help, = insert a=20 straw into the closed balloon without letting any gas escape. Insert the = other=20 end of the straw into the third cup and let the gas go into the fluid. = Observe=20 what happens. Do not do anything to the fourth indicator cup. This cup = allows=20 you to compare the first three solutions with the original, in order to = observe=20 any changes that may have occured.

So What Happened?
When = Carbon=20 Dioxide mixed with the indicator solution, the solution should have = changed=20 colors. The degree to which the color changed, lets you know which = element=20 contains more CO2 than the other. The one that should contain the most = CO2 is=20 the chemically created one using baking soda and vinegar. This is so = because it=20 contains the most concnetrated amount to CO2. The second hishest amount = should=20 be your respiration, and the last is the air in the atmosphere, because = it is=20 mixed with oxygen and others.
