Quizzes covering the assigned readings or previous lecture
may be given at the beginning of any lecture or lab section, unless otherwise
noted. Always bring a small scantron to class. Quizzes will be closed book,
but one page (8.5" x 11", both sides) of notes may be used. You may
be asked to turn in the notes with the quizzes.
There will be a total of 200 quiz points during the quarter. Quizzes
may cover the reading assigned for that day and may also include general
questions from the previous lecture. Questions that most appropriately
would be asked on days on which we have field trips or guests may be on
quizzes on the day of the next regular class meeting. Quizzes will include
multiple choice questions and short essay questions. You should bring a
small scantron to every class.
In addition, there will be opportunities to earn a few extra credit
points that will be applied to your quiz grade. These will be announced
in class and posted on the quiz page (this page) of the class web site.
No more than 20 quiz points may be from extra credit.
For up to three extra credit points:

Attend the Grains of Sands mural dedication at Alcott Elementary
School (1600 S. Towne) in Pomona on April 8 at 6 p.m. Write a 300 word
essay reflecting on the mural, the event, or some other relevant aspect
of what you experienced in attending the dedication.

Attend (one of) Mike Davis' presentation on Wednesday, 5 April. He will
speak at noon and at 3:30 (to 5), and other times may be scheduled. Location
will be posted here when known. Write a 300 word essay: describing:
-
a question you posed and his answer, and what you think about the answer.
-
a question posed by someone else, his answer, and what you think about
the answer.
or
-
Do #1 by articulating the question you WOULD have asked, given the opportunity,
then address your own question in the way you think Davis would have.
This might involve saying--question X has at least two possible answers,
__a___ and ___b__. Davis likely would have answered in the direction
of answer a [b] ....... go one to elaborate how you think he would
answer, and relate it to what you heard him actually say in his talk or
in answering the questions of others.
OR
Address ONE of the following in 300-400 words:

(re noon talk) What did Davis mean by the "new politics of destruction?"
How does this politics relate to the old politics of [infrastructure] construction?

(re 3:30 talk) Davis cited Myron Orfield, author of the article you
read for Reaction paper #1. What did he say about Orfield, and what
point was Davis making when he referred to Orfield? What do you think
about this point?

At noon (maybe again at 3:30), Davis described the literature about Los
Angeles as being a bifurcated literature--on one hand are the "brag books"
supporting a boosteristic picture of SoCal, and on the other hand are the
"L.A. noir" books showing poverty and meaness found here. He said
that in the first half of the century, the L.A. noir genre was tied to
progressive political movements--people who exposed poverty and meanness
working together with organizations who tried to make changes that would
create opportunities for the poor and the excluded. But today, that
partnership barely exists. As a current "L.A. noir" writer, to what
progressive political movements does Davis look, and how would YOU envision
a partnership between critics/commentators like Davis and a political movement.

Attend the APSA Dodgers game outing. Write a
300 word essay addressing one of the following question:
-
How do URP students build community among the student body? How does an
event like this contribute to or take away from the sense of community?
-
Why are professional sports teams considered a positive force for the creation
of civic pride? What evidence did you find at the game that supports of
contradicts this?
-
Revisit this question from quiz 6. Write an essay of 400 words addressing:
Why is infrastructure financing so difficult, complicated and contentious?
If you choose, you may answer the question by addressing a specific example.
For example, you could answer the question: Why is financing of a water
system (or a wastewater system, etc.) so difficult, complicated and contentious?
Hint: think about what we covered last week as well as the readings for
today.

Participate in Paint your heart out in Anaheim with the Orange
County Section of the APA. Submit photographic evidence.

(714)444.9199. Paint your heart out Anaheim has repaired and repainted
317 homes for low income, disabled, and needy senior citizens. More
than 2.5 million dollars of improvements have been made to Anaheim neighborhoods.

Go on a harbor tour of the LA Harbor. Bring photographic evidence.For information,
see their web page:
http://www.laharborcruises.com/harbor.htm. There are a couple different
tours (varying lengths and prices). Any one is okay. It does
have to be a tour on a boat. If you get sea sick, this might not
be the extra credit for you! If you find a land-based tour of another
major piece of infrastructure, suggest it!

On Wednesday, 26 May, participate in a focus group for the WASC self-study.
WASC is the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, Cal Poly Pomona's
accrediting body. We are applying for reaccreditation. The
application requires information and opinions from students to be collected.
THe focus group will be in 7-217, and will last one hour.

You can earn from 1-5 points
of
extra credit by doing the following:
Develop questions AND answers for an internet lab on one of the topics
below. Each question should be meaningful and the answer (which should
be provided) should be found at a web site to which you provide the link
or URL. You may submit this electronically in HTML format or as a
word document.
One point per question/answer/url. Work alone or in groups under
the following conditions:
Two rules:

only one group (of one or more people) per topic. Claim a topic by
emailing me ASAP. I will put the list on the web page and indicate
which topics are taken as they are taken.

one point per person per question. SO, if a group of 1 (a person
working alone) submits 5 questions, that person can get up to 5 points.
If a group of 3 submits 5 questions, each person can only get 5/3 points
each. The group of three should submit 15 questions for maximum points.
