  1. CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Examines how infrastructure systems such as transportation, energy, water, and public facilities serve people and their activities. Teaches skills for infrastructure planning, evaluation, and implementation. 3 lecture-discussions, 3 hours of laboratory. Prerequisite: URP 335. Concurrent enrollment required.

    URP 337S (CRN 30014) "meets" online, but optional face-to-face meetings will occasionally occur to accommodate guest speakers. These meetings will be from 9:30 to 10:50 a.m. in "Studio D" in the CLA building. Students who do not attend face-to-face for the guest speakers will need to view them via streaming video, which will be archived. Guest speakers are coming on the following days:
    Monday, 15 April Linda Apodaca et al. Foothill Transit's zero-emissions city bus.

    URP 337SL meets on Mondays (CRN 30034) from noon to 2:50 p.m. in 7-215 or (CRN 30035) on Wednesdays from 8 to 10:50 a.m. in 7-215. The labs will occasionally meet elsewhere for fieldtrips and for fieldwork projects.

  2. EXPECTED OUTCOMES: On successful completion of the course, students should be able to demonstrate:
    1. Understanding of frameworks by which to conceptualize infrastructure.
    2. Familiarity with various types of urban infrastructure sites, facilities, and services.
    3. Knowledge of methods for planning, evaluating and implementing social and physical infrastructure programs.
    4. Skills in the oral, written, and graphic presentation of information about infrastructure and issues related to its provision.
    5. An understanding of how citizen participation can influence infrastructural development
    COURSE REQUIREMENTS
    1. Participation in all online activities, including discussions, video viewing, online lecture viewing and quizzes; participation in all lab activities, including field trips (during three of the lab periods).
    2. Timely completion of assigned readings and quizzes.
    3. Participation during class and lab activities.
    4. Timely completion and submission of research paper and labs.  Late research papers will lose 10% of the possible points for each business day late. Late labs will not be accepted.

  3. EXAMINATIONS
    EXAMS:
    There will be eight weekly quizzes, each worth 3% of the grade. There will be no other exams.

  4. INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS
    Readings will be made available through Blackboard directly and via links to other websites and in a reader available at "Ask Copy" (3530 West Temple Ave., Pomona--just west of Carl's Jr.). The current syllabus will be the online syllabus. Unless otherwise noted, all readings on the syllabus are required readings.

  5. MINIMUM STUDENT MATERIALS:
    Students will be expected to have access to computers in their homes or in University labs; internet access, word-processing and spreadsheet software will be used. Occasionally students will need simple calculators. Students should receive email sent to their university email accounts, as this is what Blackboard uses.

  7. STATEMENT ON ACADEMIC INTEGRITY
  8. Be aware of University guidelines regarding academic integrity ("Student Conduct and Discipline" section of the 2012-13 University Catalog): All forms of academic dishonesty at Cal Poly are a violation of University policy and will be considered a serious offense. That is, violations will be referred to the Office of Judicial Affairs and will result in failing grades on the assignment in question. Academic dishonesty includes but is not limited to:

    5. Falsification and fabrication also includes making stuff up and presenting it as authentic observation of phenomena, as research involving data.
