Fall 2011 Conference Discussion Notes: Early Warning System-At Risk Students

Leading indicators applicable to CPP students

  • # units or # requirements remaining
  • Core GPA (also need a more efficient way to access Core GPA)
  • Performance in first college level courses following required preparatory math and/or English completion
  • Overload of  units attempted by At-Risk students
  • Enrollment in upper division courses too early in student’s path to degree
  • Completion of gateway courses
  • Term GPA below 2.0 for any given quarter (even if good standing)
  • Failure to pass repeated course(s)
  • “Isolating” behavior:  distant or not receptive to information
  • # of hours worked and/or financial difficulties, particularly for full-time students
  • Family, personal, health and students who complain about specific professors

How info should be provided to faculty and staff advisors

  • Identification of class standing based on progress to degree rather than # units taken
  • Batch download of student advising files to review students quicker
  • Automated system to  keep records of Academic Performance contracts to help advisor reference progress and track actions for which students need to be held accountable
  • Charts that help illustrate GPAs for students individually to help advisors track trends or warning signs easier.
  • Diagnostic tool - GPA by course prefix: List of GPAs of students in specific areas or categories such as all English classes, all math classes
  • Easier way to access CORE GPA

Ways for advisors to address the students’ difficulties

  • Find a way to empower students to take ownership of their academic progress (individual study plans)
  • Consider 2.5 as at risk rather than the set 2.2GPA for academic performance agreements
  • Be more intentional as advisor to know students and records
  • Registration holds for students with Core GPA below 2.0

Suggested practices for intervention

  • Increased focus on success indicators during orientation
  • Workshops and/or training on Academic Self-confidence; additional programs to help students learn how to be a successful college student
  • More intervention with students who are heading towards at-risk
  • Mandatory advisement for students at risk to help make definitive decisions for graduation
  • Mandatory advising for students with GPA below 2.5
  • Specific advisors to help meet with students who are at-risk
  • Contact or communication between faculty and advisors especially for at risk students (mechanism available in Blackboard)
  • Required check-in meeting twice per quarter
  • Peer advisors or student volunteers help with checking in with students who are at risk
  • Pre-populate classes for the next quarter

Other suggestions:

  • Look at other early warning systems:  CPP Mechanical Engineering and CSU Northridge
  • Inform students about important information and indicators they should be paying attention to throughout their years at CPP. For example, checking CORE GPA and Degree Progress Report
  • Unofficial Transcripts are more difficult to download with new People Soft system.
