Advising in an integral part of helping students maximize their academic success. Faculty are often asked to advise students in their departments with little training or guidance. Even seasoned advisors are not experts in all of the changing policies and support services that relate to student success. The Graduation Initiative is launching a year-long discussion with the campus community to better understand the status of advising at Cal Poly Pomona and to provide recommendations to improve this important service.

National research has shown that students are more likely to graduate if they are continuously enrolled and successfully complete a minimum number of courses each year, in particular completing critical gateway and GE courses in a timely manner, with a consistently healthy GPA. Early identification of indicators that do not support student success will provide opportunities for communication and guidance to avoid students becoming at-risk academically.
The objectives of this project are to determine the leading indicators of student success for CPP undergraduates; establish a way to measure and track these indicators; create a system to communicate this information to students and to share with faculty and staff advisors to support academic advising; and to identify best practices for intervention to facilitate more successful behavior. Enrollment Services obtained a Kellogg Legacy Endowment Grant to partially fund these activities, and the Graduation Initiative is supporting this effort.

Learning communities improve student success, particularly among underrepresented students, by increasing student engagement with the university community and improving students’ understanding of academic expectations. Faculty and staff are invited to join this project. A call from the Academic Senate for a faculty coordinator and college representatives will be issued in late September. The Graduation Initiative Steering Committee will also appoint staff representatives from both Academic Affairs and Student Affairs.

Students’ time to degree is delayed when they must repeat a course multiple times before achieving the necessary grade to continue. The solution is not simply to award the grade needed, but to boost students’ performance so they achieve the desired learning outcomes in their first attempt. The Enriching Courses Project will provide support to departments to enrich high enrollment courses, particularly those identified as “bottleneck” courses, in which a significant number of registered students do not meet the learning outcomes of the course.
Departments are invited to submit proposals funded through a Kellogg Legacy Endowment Grant administered by the Graduation Initiative Steering Committee. An RFP will be issued in early October.

MyBAR is a system to record co-curricular student activities in a central data system. It will be possible to accuartely document student activities, study the impact that they have on academic performance, and use this information in student advisinig. Two benefits of the system under development include the ability for students to look at their own record and to learn about all the campus organizations in one place. The system will be launched in Fall Quarter 2011. The Dean of Students obtained a Kellogg Legacy Endowment Grant to partially fund these activities, and the Graduation Initiative is supporting this effort.
