The  lighted  crosswalk  system  is  activated  by  two solar powered control units. Click to Zoom. Each  bollard contains sensor circuitry, and they are placed so pedestrians must pass between them. Click to Zoom. The  built-in  sensors  detect  pedestrians  using  the crosswalk and detect their direction of travel. Click to Zoom.

About This Project

The southbound right-turn lane from Mansion Lane to University Drive was removed, and the sidewalk reconstructed. To decrease pedestrian crossing distance the diagonal crosswalk from Building 1 to the corner of Building 94 was replaced with a perpendicular crosswalk; all four corners of the intersection are now connected with new crosswalks with highly reflective crosswalk pattern. New more effective signs were installed, including a flashing beacon on each direction of University Drive to give motorists advanced warning of pedestrians on the crosswalks; new and existing cubs were painted indicating no parking zones on side streets.

The speed bump near the intersection was removed, and a new raised crosswalk between Building 1 and the quad area was also installed.

Project Funding

  • Funding for this project is from the Minor Capital Outlay Appropriation, Campus General Funds, Student Affairs and FD&C Trust Funds.

Progress of Major Construction Activities

  • In-pavement flashers have been installed at the intersection four crosswalks. The solar powered system utilizes a series of LED’s embedded in the roadway which flashes when a pedestrian passes through an activation gate (Bollards) breaking an optical beam.
