About This Project
The scope of the Energy Efficiency HVAC Retrofit for Music Building 24 is to convert the constant volume, double duct, air handling unit, SA-3/RA-3, into a variable air volume (VAV), double duct air handling unit. With this approach, this air handling system will operate as a VAV system in that cold and hot air will not need to be mixed anymore, except when code minimum air flows are reached. Each zone will generally either call for heating or cooling, and the air flow to that zone will be varied to satisfy thermal need. The supply fan and return fan, provided with new variable frequency drives (VFDs) will slow down or speed up to deliver only the amount of air needed to satisfy load.

Project Funding
- Funding for this project is from the campuses Deferred Maintenance Budget, the S.C. Edison Energy Rebate Fund and the General Utility Budget Fund.
Progress of Major Construction Activities
- All major activities complete with additional programming, adjustments at controllers, air-balancing and testing on-going.
- Punch-list is in progress. Hallway ceiling has been reassembled with “access panels” installed for easy in future servicing. Touch-up is nearly complete.
Key/Critical Issues Currently Pending
- Because of the age and condition of the existing system and the intricacies involved with upgrading such, there have been programming, calibrating, and air balancing challenges.
- Punch-list is basically complete but will not be signed off as 100% until any remaining programming and air balancing concerns are worked out. Some related work scheduled to take place during this Easter weekend.
Upcoming Utility or Other Interruptions
- None anticipated although additional controllers related work will be taking place by the energy management system/controls subcontractor during the weekend of April 18th and 19th.
