Building Permit Process

The Building Permit Program promotes the orderly identification of campus planning and development issues, formalizing a process for project recognition, planning, document development, code compliance reviews, bidding, and the project management / inspection of all capital construction projects performed on the Campus.

The "building permit" application process:

Any campus department, auxiliary or the Foundation who proposes to undertake a capital construction project utilizing resources other than those of FD&C or FM must apply for a Building Permit. A building permit is required when any one of the following conditions occurs:

  • walls, windows, doors, ceilings or other architectural building elements are modified.
  • heating ventilating and air conditioning, plumbing or electrical systems are altered.
  • exterior building or landscape improvements and signage are affected.
  • any work or equipment purchase (i.e. multiple open office furniture systems or workstations) which may affect disabled access, legal exiting, energy consumption, or cause exposure to hazardous material(s).
  • any construction contractor not under the auspices of FM or FD&C who performswork on campus.
  • any "student" or class project supervised by campus faculty for the benefit of the students and campus.
  • any "research" project developed by a department for the benefit of students and furnished to a large extent by an "outside" vendor or donor.

Once an application for a Building Permit is approved, the applicant will be given authorization to proceed in accord with established guidelines.

Any campus department, auxiliary or the Foundation who performs a public works construction project without the requisite Building Permit may be required to immediately remove said Work and restore the area to its original condition at its sole expense as may be directed by FD&C or FM.
