The Custodial Services unit maintains over 1.9 million square feet of building space. The custodial crew is here in the early hours to identify and report any potential problems. They provide general housekeeping tasks for the campus, respond to emergency cleanups, spray for insects inside of buildings, and provide any additional assistance to colleges and schools in their accreditation review process. The staff assists in preparing for and cleaning up after special events. They also lock and unlock buildings to ensure adequate security. Their motto is to "create and maintain a clean, comfortable and safe campus environment."
With 130 buildings and 1,989,000 square feet of buildings on campus, the custodial crew is kept busy with a rigorous daily routine. The custodians begin their daily work at 3:00 a.m. to ensure that all classrooms, laboratories, restrooms and other public areas are clean and ready before the first class begins. The custodial unit is divided into several crews, which are assigned to specific buildings. Each custodial worker is responsible for a specific area and takes great pride in his or her work. The custodians can be counted upon, and the staff members in each building come to rely on and know them on a first-name basis.
A crew of four staff members is assigned to stripping and waxing floors on a routine basis. Notification is given ahead of time and the floors are cleaned and waxed once a year on a rotating schedule. Special attention is given to new floors: they are sealed and waxed several times after installation and prior to occupancy of the room.
