The Master of Science in Agriculture with the option in Nutrition and Food Science offers both a Thesis-based and a non-Thesis-based interdisciplinary in-depth study of the principles and application of nutrition and food sciences. The program is structured to meet the objectives of both the generalist and those seeking specialization in one of the following areas: nutritional biochemistry, community nutrition, clinical nutrition, or food science. The successful candidate will acquire skills to pursue careers in teaching, research, community service, industry or advanced graduate studies. The teaching format includes discussions, laboratory work, field experiences, seminars and independent research.
Nutrition students can also choose a non-thesis track. Students in the non-thesis track prepare a critical scientific review of publishable quality. Students in the thesis track will conduct a project, collect and analyze data, and write a Thesis. Both tracks require 45 Units.
An applicant for admission to either master's degree program must have a baccalaureate degree in foods and nutrition or a baccalaureate degree with a minimum of 24 quarter units of courses in Foods and Nutrition or a related discipline, have taken the GRE and must be in receipt of three letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with the applicant's academic qualifications and potential as a graduate student. The applicant must have a 3.00 (B) GPA. Foreign university graduates are required to pass the TOEFL exam with a score of 550 or above. An applicant not meeting these standards may be conditionally accepted and must comply with the requirements of the unconditional admission within three quarters of that admission. Nutrition or Food Science students pursuing the Thesis must be accepted by a faculty member who will serve as the Thesis Advisor. Admission to the program does not admit a student to candidacy.
