2008 WCFMC News

Cal Poly Pomona hosted the 4th annual Western Collegiate Food Marketing Competition. The competition was held at Cal Poly Pomona campus in the Bronco Union URSA Major on April 19th, 2008. This year the event continued to grow as even more colleges joined the three separate divisions. The divisions include 2-Year Community College, 4-Year International, and 4-Year Western. This year, participating schools included California State University Chico, New Mexico State University, Arizona State University, California State University, Fresno, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, Great Basin College, Chaffey College, Consumnes River College and Colorado State University.

2nd - California State Univ., Chico

California State University, Chico won first place in the 4-Year International Division for "Perk," their all-natural coffee additive which can also be consumed as is. It is bottled by a Japanese beverage company and will be sold through the extensive system of vending machines in Japan. It is primarily targeted towards on-the-go 18 to 24 years olds who are seeking a "natural energy boost" for the day's activities.

Colorado State University won second place for their product in the 4-Year International Division. Sold under the name, Purple Majesty, the team's product was purple potatoes from Australia. More to come...

Chaffey College received first place for their product "Good to go..." in the Community College 2-Year Division. Their product consisted of wholesome organic vending machine snacks which are also low in fat and high in energy. These snacks are directed towards middle school and high school students in the Los Angeles Unified School District. The snacks include a line of bars, snack mixes and pure fruit juices that "fill the void in the student's stomachs."

Consumnes River College placed second in the Community College 2-Year Division for their product, Moooorganic Beef Jerky. Their primary targets were NASCAR, minor league baseball and health gyms. Moooorganic Beef Jerky is for the individual who loves beef jerky, and wants a healthy, easy organic product that is both satisfying and nutritious.

California State Polytechnic University, Pomona won first place for their product in the 4-Year Western Division. Decadent Delights is name of their product which is a milk product based Gelato and is very similar to ice cream which is both healthy and tasty. The product is marketed under the name Gia Dolce. As well as targeting schools and grocery chains, the team plans on opening their own stores in the near future.

California State University, Chico took second place in the 4-Year Western Division.

Their product "Infused" combines two complimentary products into one convenient package with a handy recycled base. One half consists of extra virgin olive oil and the other half balsamic vinagrette. It is marketed towards middle and upper class consumers who appreciate fine gourmet foods and sold in gourmet supermarkets throughout California.

Poster Winners at the Luncheon - Sponsored by Hidden Villa Ranch

Lunch was all a buzz with activity from all the students working on an advertising piece for two new Hidden Villa Ranch egg products.  There were twelve tables with students and advisors grouped as teams.  Six were given one egg product and six were given another egg product.  The teams were challenged to design a print ad and slogan for the assigned product.

These team think tanks resulted in a number of innovative useable and practical advertising ideas.  Each member of the winning team received a gift certificate to Starbucks.

2007 WCFMC News

The 3rd annual Western Collegiate Food Marketing Competition took place in Anaheim, California on March 7, 2007 in conjunction with SCIFTS Suppliers Night. This year the event continued to grow as even more colleges joined the three separate competing divisions: 2-Year College, 4-Year International and 4-Year Western. The competition expanded to include colleges and universities from five western states; Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada and Oregon.

The teams presented comprehensive business/marketing plans for an array of new food products. A corporate/industry panel of judges from various local companies judged each team's 20-minute business plan presentation.

At the end of the day, California State University, Chico succeeded in winning both the 4-Year International and 4-Year Western Divisions. A new-comer, Chaffey College, took first place in the 2-Year Division.  The 4-Year Western Division also saw Colorado State University place second while California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo and two separate teams from Portland State University rounded out the top five. In the 4-Year International Division, the University of Nevada, Reno placed second and California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, Arizona State University and Great Basin College of Agriculture finished in the top five. Rio Hondo College took second in the 2-Year Division and Cosumnes River College placed in the top five.

California State University, Chico Wins both 4-Year Divisions

California State University, Chico won first place in the International Division with the “Sprinx cookie toolkit.” This toolkit (containing cookies, frosting and sprinkles) being targeted to Canadian mothers is a creative alternative to lunchtime and on-the-go snacking for kids. Team Members Included - Annie Maddalena, William Weese, Brian Greathouse, and Colleen Bartlett.

Cal State Chico placed first in the Western Division with “Bliss” - “Purely for Pleasure.” This product incorporates three US grown strawberries with 2 ounces of gourmet whipped decadent specialty dark chocolate displayed in a luxurious package. Team Members Included - Jeff Alves, Heather Clement, Jayme Crank, Scott Cummings, Erica Flores, and Nicolina Prestininzi.

Chaffey College won first place for “The cHocolate GardeN”, which “provides chocolate lovers with a sustainable, fresh, organic and natural vitamin filled chocolate”. Team members included – Jeff Chavis, Joshua Furman, Luciana Leal, Daniel Swift, Advisor.
