Our everyday acts of teaching and learning take place within complex social, political, and institutional changes. Taking time to read and talk about current issues in education can be invigorating for all members of the university community. As part of the Faculty Center for Professional Development's mission to promote collegial relations and enhance faculty vitality, the Faculty Center supports Reading Circles.
Do you want to read and reflect with others about teaching and learning? Are you part of a small group seeking to think together about educational issues in your field? Consider proposing and participating in a campus reading group with support from The Faculty Center for Professional Development.
The Faculty Center can provide any or all of the following support for reading groups:
Reading groups are encouraged to explore a specific issue in-depth from interdisciplinary perspectives, or to examine a topic through the lens of a specific discipline; however, groups are welcome to propose any topic related to teaching and learning or faculty professional development. Past Faculty Center Reading Group books include: Richard Dawkins' The God Delusion, Derek Bok's Our Underachieving Colleges, Ken Bain's What the Best College Teachers Do, Morris Shamos' The Myth of Scientific Literacy, The National Research Council's How People Learn, Barbara Walvoord and Virginia Anderson's Effective Grading: A Tool for Learning and Assessment.
Registration is limited to ten participants. Participants receive copies of the book, courtesy of The Faculty Center for Professional Development. To propose a book/articles, please contact or email Dr. Peggy Perry at 869-2897 email: psmclaughlin@csupomona.edu.
