Investigating Teaching & Learning (ITaL)
The Faculty Center for Professional Development announces the 2009-2010 ITaL Fellowship program to support the investigation of teaching and learning in our classrooms. The ITaL Fellowship offers resources for faculty to conduct a systematic exploration of student learning within the context of a specific course at Cal Poly Pomona. Through a series of workshops and meetings, ITaL Fellows will identify a specific “problem” within a course they teach regularly, and carry out an investigation that will give them greater insight into the underlying causes or precise nature of the problem and some potential solutions. They will then implement some change(s) in the course that they believe will address the problem and lead to greater student success. Fellows will study and document the success of this change. Through analysis and interpretation of the results of their investigation, Fellows will offer lessons learned for other instructors' benefit.

Sustainability in the Classroom
One of Cal Poly Pomona's core values is “environmental sustainability.” The goal of the 2009-2010 Sustainability in the Classroom Faculty Learning Community is to give faculty time and resources to consider how sustainability can be explicitly addressed in courses or curricula. This FLC is intended to extend Cal Poly Pomona's expression of the core value of sustainability by engaging faculty members who have not yet had the opportunity to think through issues of sustainability in their courses or curricula.
This FLC will provide resources for up to 8 faculty from various disciplines to explore the concepts of sustainability and consider ways to incorporate these concepts into classes and curricula. Through workshops, meetings, and individual work, Sustainability FLC members will identify specific actions that they can take through the design of courses and curricula, to contribute the Cal Poly Pomona core value of sustainability. This FLC is supported by the Office of the Provost and by the Cal Poly Pomona Climate Commitment Task Force. We would like to extend special thanks to these entities for their encouragement and support for this FLC.

The purpose of the mini-grant program (awards generally less than $1,000) is to help faculty members achieve professional development goals that enhance the educational mission of Cal Poly Pomona. The awards are meant to encourage faculty professional development activities relating to teaching and learning, research and creative activities, and travel for presentations at conferences, seminars, and workshops.
Please note that for the 2008-09 program, international travel is not being approved by the university due to the extraordinary budget situation. Consequently, proposals for international travel will NOT be accepted in 2008-09.
Mini-Grant Report Form 2008-09: Due July 31, 2009, hard copy, in the Faculty Center.
