What tracks are offered within the Gender, Ethnicity and Multicultural Studies (GEMS) major?

The EWS Department has two main program tracks for students:  the pre-credential BA track for those wishing to become elementary school teachers and the general tack for those desiring a BA in GEMS.

The GEMS major consists of two tracks:

  • The general GEMS track offers comparative understanding of ethnic and gender relations with concentration in: African American, Asian American, Native American, Chicano(a)/Latino(a) and Women’s Studies.
  •  The pre-credential track prepares undergraduates to teach in California public schools.

What types of careers goals could be enhanced with a degree in GEMS?

A major in Gender, Ethnicity and Multicultural Studies is especially helpful in careers in which an understanding of contemporary women’s and multicultural issues is essential, such as health, education, public relations, social work, religious studies and the law.

What kind of degree does the GEMS major confer?

A Bachelor of Arts degree.

Does EWS offer a minor?

Yes. A GEMS minor is offered in the following areas:
African American Studies Minor, Asian American Studies Minor, Chicano/Latino Studies Minor, Native American Studies Minor, Women’s Studies Minor, Interdisciplinary Minor in Multicultural Leadership Studies.
