Welcome From The Dean

Dr. Mahyar Amouzegar, Dean College of Engineering

Hello and welcome to the College of Engineering at Cal Poly Pomona. We are the 17th largest engineering school in the nation, and offer one of the best undergraduate programs in the country.

At Cal Poly Pomona, and especially in the College of Engineering, Learn by Doing” is not just a motto; rather, it is a system that is fully implemented by each department and in every program. It is a deeply held belief that is fully engrained in the culture of the College.   “Learn by Doing” is a method that without a doubt produces the best engineers in the world.

The College of Engineering has had over fifty years of success in educating the best undergraduate students in a wide range of engineering and engineering technology disciplines. We are very proud of this history, which would have never been possible without the dedication of our faculty, staff and students. 

However, the “Learn by Doing” model demands a tremendous amount of resources: it requires essentially one-to-one pairings of lectures with laboratories and activities; it involves dozens of student projects, clubs and competitions; it demands numerous fieldtrips, and internships; it requires faculty involvement in undergraduate research; and finally a large number of staff to support all these activities.

Yet, there has been a monumental shift in how public higher education and in particular engineering programs are funded. In each of the last 10 years, student fees have increased, while the support from the citizens of California has declined.   The result has been a new paradigm where more and more of the burden for funding the education and training of our students has shifted directly to the colleges.  In addition, changing demographics in the workplace have created a greater demand for a workforce with advanced degrees.

Therefore, in order to continue to provide the highest quality of education and training to our next generation of engineers, we must take a comprehensive approach to create new sources of revenue through research and scholarly activities, philanthropy and self-support graduate programs.  Thus,

  • The College of Engineering is committed to maintaining the “Learn by Doing”approach in engineering instruction, as it provides our students a competitive advantage in the professional marketplace, and positions the College as a leader in undergraduate education and applied research nationwide.  The College of Engineering at Cal Poly Pomona will continue to contribute to the economic development of the region by educating an effective and high-quality workforce to meet local, state and national needs.
  • The College of Engineering is committed to providing exceptional undergraduate educational opportunities through proactive recruitment, retention and support services that will lead to academic and professional success for all of our students, especially those whose access to higher education has been limited in the past.
  • The College of Engineering is committed to promoting graduate programs in order to enhance the College’s reputation, and meet the growing demand for students with advanced degrees.  Some of the focus will be on self-support programs, which will generate additional revenue for the departments and the College.   The College will work with key corporate partners to attract and retain “thought-leaders” in strategically important fields in an effort to enhance the current capabilities of each department.
  • The College of Engineering is committed to supporting research and scholarly activities through external and internal grants, contracts and business partnerships with local and national organizations interested in leveraging the resources of the College. This effort will help us to attract talented academics who fully understand our special relationships with private and public sector organizations, and who can expand our research portfolio for the betterment of our students.
  • The College of Engineering is committed to cultivating a strong sense of community. We seek to serve a variety of constituencies (students, faculty and staff, industrial partners, alumni, parents, faculty emeriti, government agencies, professional service groups and other non-profit entities, etc.), and partner with them to realize our strategic goals that clearly contribute to the growth and prosperity of our college.

I'd like to invite prospective students to learn more about Bronco Engineering, and for others to read about the numerous ways of giving. The College of Engineering is dedicated to providing students with the highest quality education possible, while serving as an important resource to the region and beyond.
