2009 College of Engineering Commencement Mace Bearer
After 32 years of distinguished service at Cal Poly Pomona, Civil Engineering Professor Peter J. Clark was selected to be the 2009 Commencement Mace Bearer for the College of Engineering. Each year a Mace Bearer is chosen to lead the graduates in their historic march.
Throughout his career at Cal Poly Pomona, Professor Clark consistently upheld the highest levels of professionalism, and actively transmitted this value to his colleagues and students.
Professor Clark brought valuable experience with him when he came to Cal Poly Pomona. He graduated with degrees in civil engineering from New Jersey Institute of Technology and CSU Long Beach. Later he practiced engineering at Cal Trans, the City of Santa Barbara and with a consulting firm. Since arriving at Cal Poly Pomona, Professor Clark has had an impressive career including a dedicatation to service to his students and community.
For more than 25 years Professor Clark has been the faculty advisor to Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) student chapter. In this capacity, he was a friend and mentor to the ITE officers and members, and has spent untold hours working with them. In addition, he held various leadership positions in ITE, including a term as President of the Southern California Section.
In 2004 he received the Outstanding Transportation Educator award from ITE District 6, the 2004 Professor of the Year award from the Cal Poly Pomona American Society for Civil Engineering (ASCE) student chapter, and the 2005 Section Educator Award from ITE.
In all, Professor Clark served as a member of the Cal Poly Pomona Academic Senate for fifteen years, including eight years as chair of the Academic Affairs Committee and ten years as a member of the Steering Committee. In addition, Professor Clark served as a member of the CSU Academic Senate for three years.
Professor Clark is a registered professional civil engineer and professional traffic engineer in California. His expertise in these areas made him an important part of the university's Parking and Transportation Committee for twelve years, where he advised the university on many parking and traffic issues. In his Department, Professor Clark lead the effort to create and implement the surveying option in the BS Civil Engineering program.
Peter Clark recently retired from his full time teaching position, although will continue to teach civil engineering part time at Cal Poly Pomona. He will spend his time off continuing to be active in the traffic engineering profession, doing repair projects on three buildings, as well as traveling and spending time with his wife, two children, and two grandchildren.
