Project Lead The Way Design Challenge prepares High School Students for Engineering

High School students particpate in PLTW Design Challenge 2010

High School students participate in the First Annual PLTW Design Challenge

Thanks to generours sponsorship from Chevron and General Atomics, regional and state design competitions for high school students were offered starting this year at various locations througout California.

Statewide, more than 80 student teams participated in the First Annual Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Design Challenge.

Current and past students that took either Introduction to Engineering (IED) or Principals of Engineering (POE) Project Lead The Way courses were invited to enter the competition, with up to three members per team.

The top three teams in each regional were invited to the final competition in San Diego. The POE final competition will be held on May 8, 2010. The IED final competition will be held on May 15, 2010.

First Place Team
1st Place - Team Burroughs from Burroughs High School in Ridgecrest

Four teams from three schools traveled to Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday, May 1, 2010 for POE Regional Competition. Each team created “machines” to drop ping pong balls in a specific “cup” order.

Competiting schools included:
Burroughs High School
California Academy of Math & Science (two teams)
Palos Verdes High School

 

Prizes were awarded as follows: $200 (1st place), $100 (2nd place), and $50 (3rd place) Amazon gift cards for each team member along with PLTW bookpacks. An $800 travel stipend was also awarded to each of the top two teams in each region to attend the final competition. The final competition will include prizes such as an Apple IPad, digital camera, and more for each member of the winning team.
