Outstanding Academic Advisors

Prior to 1991-92 AY outstanding student advisors were recognized by individual Colleges and Schools in various ways. President Suzuki instituted a University program to recognize and salute the valued contributions of advisors to our entire student body.

All faculty and staff of the College of Engineering are eligible for this honor. The College solicits nominations from students, faculty, and staff, with a committee composed of previous awardees selecting the college candidate. We believe that educators facilitate student learning by both teaching and advising. We seek to identify those individuals advancing student performance and success by sharing best practices not only with their students but also with colleagues.

The Outstanding Advisor Plaque is on display in the College Offices.

image
The 2007 Outstanding Academic Advisors were each honored for their dedication to students.

Sometimes it's for being the cheerful and supportive person in the office or the professor who sends out constant e-mails about job opportunities. It could also be the professor who is spotted working on a Saturday by her students or the one who convinces his student to pursue grad school.

The reasons why some staff and faculty are awarded Outstanding Academic Advisor of the Year are plentiful and diverse. However, they all share similar characteristics in that they go above and beyond supporting their students' endeavors.

On May 17, more than 100 people came together to honor this year's exemplary group at the 2007 Outstanding Academic Advisers Awards. President Michael Ortiz and Provost Tomas Morales hosted a reception for the honorees at the CLA Building's Heritage Conference Center.

The Outstanding Academic Advisor Awards recognize faculty and staff members who excel in helping students reach their potentials. The awardees are each chosen by faculty, staff and students from their college or division.

  • Gregory J. Partida, College of Agriculture
  • Anna M. Carlin, College of Business Administration
  • Thienhuong Hoang, College of Education & Integrative Studies
  • Christina Chavez, College of Education & Integrative Studies

President Pays Tribute to Outstanding Academic Advisers

All of the faculty and staff members honored this year with Outstanding Academic Advisers Awards have something in common, according to the students and colleagues who nominated them. These individuals are devoted to their students, passionate about academic success and always go above and beyond the job description of an adviser to make a difference in students’ lives.

President Michael Ortiz honored the Outstanding Academic Advisers for their dedication to students with a ceremony and reception on May 27 at the CLA Building’s Heritage Conference Center.

“There are so many things related to good advising – student persistence, graduation rate and clarification of what an individual wants to do with their life,” said Ortiz. “Good advisers sit with students to discuss what their professional aspirations are and guide them to make the right choices in reaching those aspirations.”

“I know that the students at Cal Poly Pomona are extremely delighted with the quality of advising they get in general, but the individuals we are recognizing today are outstanding examples of that,” he said.

This year’s outstanding advisers are:

  • Gerald E. Hackett, College of Agriculture
  • Robert L. Hurt, College of Business Administration
  • Kamran Abedini, College of Engineering
  • Charles E. Loggins, College of Environmental Design
  • Lisa Nelson, College of Letters, Arts & Social Sciences
  • Herb Fynewever, College of Science
  • Michael Godfrey, Collins School of Hospitality Management
  • Kenneth M. Stahl, College of Education & Integrative Studies
  • Gretchen Anderson, Student Affairs

In addition, Educational Equity Services and the Educational Opportunity Program was selected as the Outstanding Advising Program of the Year.

The honorees were introduced by their college/school dean and a student who nominated them. Upon accepting the award, each honoree expressed their gratitude for the award and appreciation of advising.

“I’ve always thought that teaching and advising are seamless because we engage people, not just students in a classroom,” said Stahl.

Anderson, who has worked in Admissions & Outreach for nine years and, prior to that, worked in the University Advising Center for seven years, said she enjoys her job because she loves the students she meets with each day.
