Professor Wirtschafter
received her Ph.D. in Russian history from Columbia University in 1983. She is the author of From Serf to Russian
Soldier (Princeton, 1990), Structures of Society: Imperial Russia's "People of Various Ranks" (DeKalb, 1994), Social
Identity in Imperial Russia (DeKalb, 1997), and The
Play of Ideas in Russian Enlightenment Theater (DeKalb, 2003). Her numerous articles
and book reviews have appeared in a variety of scholarly journals and essay
collections. She also has received a
number of prestigious grants and fellowships, including appointment as a John
Simon Guggenheim fellow in 1998-99. This
year Professor Wirtschafter is beginning work on a new book project devoted to the
history of Russian political ideas from medieval kingship to constitutional monarchy. You can visit her in her office: building 94,
