Setting up Contribute for web pages on the Intranet

Setting up Contribute to work with the Cal Poly Pomona Intranet can be a bit confusing, and this tutorial is designed to help you with the process.

  1. Open Contribute. If the Start Page appears, you can select "Create a connection to a website".
  2. You can also do this through the menu. Choose Edit / My Connections...
  3. Select the Create... button (if you don't have any connections yet, the list will be empty).
  4. If you did not receive a connection key (which is likely), select Next.
  5. Enter the URL of the site you wish to edit. (The example is set to the Contribute Sandbox, a site which allows you to play with Contribute without damaging anything.)
  6. If you choose the Browse button, you can check your selection to make sure it is correct. Select OK, then Next.
  7. Select Secure FTP (SFTP) from the drop-down, then Next.
  8. The SFTP server is ftp.csupomona.edu. Enter your Intranet/email user name and password. (Contribute saves your password, so you should not use it on a shared computer.) Select Next.
  9. Contribute will default to the location of your individual user web space. If you are working on your own web pages, this is correct. If not, go to step 10.
  10. If you are working on web pages for an Intranet group, you'll need to modify the part of the folder address after the /fs/, for example by replacing user/jcclark with group/sandbox. Then select Next.
  11. Your name and email are requested in order to inform other users when you are in the process of editing a page (only one user can edit a page at a time). Enter the information and select Next.
  12. Ordinarily you will be a Publisher. Select Next.
  13. The next screen confirms your information. Select Done.
  14. To test your setup, choose the site from the Home Pages dropdown (if it is not already displayed).
  15. Choose an individual page to edit by using the navigation on the web site (in this example, Page Five was chosen). Select Edit Page to, uh, edit the page.
  16. Areas inside the blue "editable region" areas are editable. You will not be able to change other parts of the page.
  17. When you are done, select Publish. If you need to interrupt editing before you are done, choose Save for Later .
