Prerequisite Instructions to Connect to VPN - Mac OS 10.4
This guide will assist you in connecting your Mac OS 10.4 computer to the Cal Poly Pomona VPN.
Choose which scenario most closely remsembles your own:
- FIRST CREATION OF A VPN – If this is your first time creating a VPN connection to the Cal Poly Pomona VPN on your MAC OS 10.4 computer, follow Steps 1 - 21. You will know this is the case if you are prompted by a screen that says your computer needs to be set up to make VPN connections (Steps 3 and 4 below).
- CREATION OF AN ADDITIONAL VPN – If you have previously created a VPN connection to the Cal Poly Pomona VPN on your MAC OS 10.4 computer, then proceed directly to Step 5. You will know this is the case if you are not prompted by a screen that says your computer needs to be set up to make VPN connections (Steps 3 and 4 below)..
- CORRECTING THE CAL POLY POMONA VPN CONNECTION – If you have created a connection to the Cal Poly Pomona VPN on your MAC OS 10.4 computer but you are unable to connect, it is possible that your VPN connection is set for L2TP instead of PPTP. Skip directly to the Correcting the VPN Connection tutorial to determine if this situation applies to you. Do not proceed, however, if you have other active VPNs; instead submit a Help Desk ticket for assistance.
Step-by-Step Instructions to Connect to VPN - Mac OS 10.4
Create and Configure the VPN connection
- Double click Hard drive > Applications > Internet Connect icon.
- On the Internet Connect window, select VPN .
- When prompted, select PPTP.
- Click Continue.

- Click on VPN (PPTP).
- Click in the Configuration field.
- Select Edit Configurations from the drop-down menu.

- When the VPN (PPTP) Configurations screen appears:
- Enter a description for your VPN in the text box next to Description. For example, “CPP VPN” can be entered, but any description is fine.
- For Server Address, enter vpn.csupomona.edu.
- For Account Name, enter your BroncoName. Note: this is the part of your Cal Poly Pomona email address before the @csupomona.edu).
- Under User Authentication, select Password and enter your network password .
Note:
Your network password is what is used to access Cal Poly Pomona’s wireless network and is different from your BroncoPassword, which is used to access your Cal Poly Pomona email. To set your network password, see eHelp FAQs.
- Click OK.
- Verify that the information on the VPN (PPTP) screen is correct.

NOTE: In order to access information on the Internet other than that available over the Cal Poly Pomona VPN (say, for example, you are connected to the Cal Poly Pomona VPN and you want to open Hotmail.com or Google.com), you will have to enable split routing by following Steps 14 - 18 below. It is recommended that all Cal Poly Pomona VPN users enable split routing regardless of their expected Internet/VPN usage habits.
- Ensure that VPN (PPTP) is selected on the Internet Connections screen.
- Click Connect on the task bar at the top of your Desktop.
- Select Options from the drop-down menu.
- Uncheck Send all traffic over VPN connection.
- Click OK.

Logging into VPN
- Connect to the Internet as you normally would (i.e. dial-up, DSL, etc.).
- On the VPN (PPTP) Internet Connections screen:
- Make sure VPN (PPTP) is selected.
- Click Connect.

Correcting the VPN connection configuration
NOTE: The steps beloew should only be followed if:
- You have created a connection to the Cal Poly Pomona VPN on your MAC OS 10.4 computer without following Steps 1 - 21 above and are unable to connect to the Cal Poly Pomona VPN.
- You do not have other active VPNs.
Note:
If you do have other active VPNs do not follow the steps below. Submit a Help Desk ticket for assistance.
- Double click Hard drive > Applications > Internet Connect icon.
- Click on the VPN connection. If VPN (L2TP) is displayed, proceed to Step 3; if VPN (PPTP) is displayed then submit a Help Desk ticket for assistance.

- On the Desktop, click on System Preferences.
- Click on the Network icon.
- When the Network screen opens, click on Show.
- Select Network Port Configurations from the drop-down menu.

- Highlight VPN (L2TP).
- Click Delete.

- Click Delete when prompted by a window that asks, "Do you really want to delete configuration 'VPN (L2TP)'?".

- Click Apply Now.

- Go to Step 1 above.
