Getting Started
Physical Security
- Never leave your notebook unattended in public places. It only takes seconds for someone to swipe your computer.
- If you live in the dorms, discuss with your roommate(s) how to secure your computers.
- Secure your computer to a permanent fixture with a laptop cable or other anti-theft device.
- Before you leave your room, always lock the screen or logout, and lock doors and windows.
Digital Security
- Use a unique password to protect your BroncoPassword. Click here for password guidelines.
- Never tape passwords to your computer monitor.
- Set up automatic updates for your operating system.
- Install the latest patches and updates for desktop software, such as your Web browser, word processor and instant messaging client. Make periodic visits to the software provider's website.
- Regularly update your antivirus and anti-spyware definitions.
- Set up your computer firewall.
Secure Computing
- Unlocked screens: Lock your computer screen when you step away from your computer even if you think you'll only be away for a couple of minutes.
- An unlocked computer not only leaves you vulnerable by allowing access to online banking information, email, passwords, instant messages, address books, your identity and files, but also allows a malicious user access to the network where they can gain access to other systems.
- Avoid surfing or shopping at disreputable websites.
- Remember to make backups of your work.
- Stay informed about computer threats by reading Security Alerts.
