Removing Sensitive Files Securely

Eraser

Eraser is a means of erasing all data on a disk drive so that the original user can be certain that it cannot be recovered.

NOTE: Once you "Erase" the file, it cannot be recovered. It is completely removed from your system.

If you have any questions or concerns about the Eraser process, submit a Help Desk ticket or stop by the I&IT Help Desk. The I&IT Help Desk is located in Building 1, Room 100. It is open Monday - Thursday, 7:30 AM - 6:00 PM and Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM (excluding state holidays).

Installing Eraser

Note: This software program requires access authorization for downloading.

Download Eraser

 

  1. Click Run to start installing Eraser or save it to your desktop before running EraserSetup584X32.exe.
  2. The Eraser Installware Wizard will appear to guide you through the steps of installation.
    1. Click Next.


  3. A window containing Eraser's License Agreement will appear.
    1. Read the agreement.
    2. Place a check mark next to the box marked, "I accept the terms of the license agreement."
    3. Click Next.


  4. A window containing important information on Eraser appears.
    1. Read the information.
    2. Click Next.


  5. A Destination Folder window appears.
    1. Eraser will install to Drive C. If you want the program to install to a different place, select Change, and choose the new location.
    2. Click Next.


  6. The Select Folder window appears. You may enter a new folder name or accept the default name.
    1. Click Next.


  7. Click Next to continue installing Eraser.


  8. A progress window will appear.


  9. When installation is complete, Eraser will prompt you to close the Installware Wizard.
    1. Click Finish.

      Note: If you don't want to run Eraser at that moment, uncheck the box marked, "Run Eraser now."

Using Eraser

NOTE: Once you "Erase" the file, it cannot be recovered. It is completely removed from your system.

  1. Select the file you want to remove.
  2. Right click the file. You will see that "Erase" has been added as one of your choices.
  3. Click Erase.
