Q. What is my BroncoName? How do I find out what it is?
A. Your BroncoName is your user name for most online services at Cal Poly Pomona. It is also the part of your Cal Poly Pomona email address before the "@" sign, so that if your email address is billybronco@csupomona.edu, your BroncoName is billybronco.
You can find your BroncoName from this web site:
http://www.csupomona.edu/cgi-bin/intranet/ldap_search.pl (link opens in a new window).
Note: For the search parameters for People Search, select "exact match" and type your name as one word with an asterisk between your first and last name (e.g.: Billy*Bronco).
Q. My BroncoPassword is already complex and secure. Do I have to change it?
A. Sorry, yes.
First, we don't know your password, and literally can't know it, so we have no way of knowing whether it is complex. For your safety, passwords are stored in an encrypted form that can't be unencrypted (every time you enter a password, it is encrypted using the same method and compared with the stored encrypted version).
Our password change program didn’t require complex passwords until December 5, 2007. So if you changed your password after that date, we know that it’s complex and secure. If not, we need you to change it so that we can be assured.
Q. I changed my BroncoPassword and now I can't authenticate on my laptop.
A. If your laptop is part of a Cal Poly Pomona Win domain, either in I&IT or in a college or department, your laptop keeps a local copy of your BroncoName and BroncoPassword in a reasonably secure place on the laptop, so that you can log in even when you are not connected to the network. These are called "cached credentials." If your laptop has not been connected to the campus network, either directly on campus or through the VPN, since you changed your password, you'll need to use your old password to log in. Once you are connected to the campus network, your cached credentials will be renewed (the saved password will be replaced by your new password).
If your laptop is not part of a Cal Poly Pomona Win domain, it does not use your BroncoPassword, even if the password it uses is spelled the same. Log in with your old password and use the user controls of your laptop to change it.
Q I changed my BroncoPassword and now I can't log in to my professional organization's web site.
A. The BroncoPassword is only used for services in the csupomona.edu domain. You may have used an identical user name or password for another online service, but you'll have to use that service for changing the password — it is not your BroncoPassword, even if it is spelled the same.
It's never a good idea to use the same password for different sites if you care about the security of your information at those sites. If someone were to obtain your password for one site, they could use it at others. Cal Poly Pomona is very careful to protect your password, but other sites might not be.
Q.Is it okay if I write my BroncoPassword on a Post-It and stick it to my monitor?
A. No. That's like writing your PIN on your ATM card. If either is stolen, identity thieves have the keys to your personal information.
