LDAP allows you to connect to, and obtain data from, information directories. Here at Cal Poly Pomona, that usually means our "white pages information" with email addresses, office locations, and phone numbers. Many different programs can use the LDAP "language" to talk to the directory. For our purposes, we can divide these into three groups:
Since one of the commonest reasons to use LDAP is to get an email address, many email programs have the ability to query LDAP. We have prepared instructions for some of the most commonly used email clients at Cal Poly Pomona:
LDAP is the source of the Cal Poly Pomona People Search, and also the Department Roster tool, and in the future, it will be used more extensively for services that need to know about individuals in the Cal Poly Pomona community.
These stand-alone computer programs let you explore the intricacies of an LDAP database. A Google search provides links to many of these programs. None of them are recommended or supported by the Help Desk.
