Exchange users go to Outlook Web Access (OWA). OWA uses the proprietary Microsoft protocol to let you view emails and work with your calendar on the Exchange server. For more information on how to use OWA see, OWA instructions for Internet Explorer , OWA instructions for Non-Internet Explorer Browsers or OWA Log On.
A program that you run on your local computer that allows you to read and send email is called an "email client". Any client that supports either the SSL POP3, SSL IMAP, or the MAPI protocol can be used with Cal Poly Pomona email. We provide instructions for setting up a number of popular clients, including Outlook, Thunderbird, MacMail, and Entourage.
Any email client can connect to the Exchange server, but most users use Outlook. There is also a page of tips for using Outlook 2003.
If you would like to check your email from off-campus you can use Outlook Web Access (OWA) on the web, or you can use an email client.
If you use an email client it must be configured accordingly. If you use Microsoft Outlook with a MAPI connection you must use the campus VPN while connecting. Please note that the VPN connection is NOT available from any university housing network connections. If you use one of these connections you can use Outlook Web Access or connect with an email client using SSL POP3 or SSL IMAP.
If you are using a SSL POP3 or SSL IMAP connection from any email client you must authenticate yourself with the campus SSL SMTP (outgoing) server in order to send messages. You can achieve this by configuring your client to use SSL SMTP Authorization and utilizing your BroncoName and network password.
