Mapping a Drive

Drive mapping (also called "mounting a network share") is the process of associating a storage device (i.e., a drive or directory) to a computing device.  A "mapping" process is required for a computer to make use of a drive that isn't physically attached to it.  Just as you enter a URL address into a Web browser to find a resource, drive mapping provides your computer with addresses of the virtual drives to which you need access.

Where are these virtual drives?

All employees and students have access to the ZFS file system, which is used for file storage and for group and individual web pages. Its "share address" is files.unx.csupomona.edu. ZFS can be mapped by Windows, Macintosh, and Linux/Unix computers. ZFS is used for the examples given here.

Most employees (including all faculty) have access to the Windows file share system; it is the default location for a synchronized copy of "My Documents" on many faculty laptops. Its "share address" is files.win.csupomona.edu. It can only be accessed easily by computers running Windows. A special address, \\files.win.csupomona.edu\winlicense, provides access to campus-licensed Windows software.

All employees and students have access to the old Cal Poly Pomona Intranet, at files.csupomona.edu. The Intranet is in the process of being replaced.

Individual departments, colleges, or divisions may provide access to other file shares.

Connecting from off-campus

If you are off campus (or using the GUEST wireless network on campus), you will need to use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) connection to map a drive. The VPN provides a secure connection from your computer off campus, through the Internet, to the network and information resources at Cal Poly Pomona. For more information and to set up a VPN connection, see:

http://www.csupomona.edu/~ehelp/vpn/index.html.

You will need a network password to create a VPN connection. The network password is not the same as your BroncoPassword. To set your Network Password, see eHelp's General FAQs page at http://www.csupomona.edu/~ehelp/faq/general_faq.html (link opens in a new window).
