How To Use the Course Catalog

Fields marked with an asterisk (*) are required fields. You must enter a valid value in these fields before you can search. If you don't know a valid value and there is a magnifying glass icon next to the field, you can click on the magnifying glass to view a list of available codes for that field.

The Institution field will default to Cal Poly Pomona. Leave this field as is.

In the Subject field, enter a valid subject code, such as CIS. If you don't know a valid subject code, click on the magnifying glass icon next to the field. When the Lookup Subject Area page is displayed, enter as much or as little information as you know (or leave all fields blank if you wish), and click on the Lookup button. A list of valid subjects and their codes will be displayed. Find the subject you want and click on it. You will be returned to the Course Catalog search page, and the subject code you selected will be automatically entered in the Subject field for you.

In the Catalog Nbr field, enter a valid course number, such as 101 (catalog numbers are usually three digits, with labs adding an "L" at the end to make a four-character code). The system defaults to an Exact Match search, but you can also perform a wildcard search by selecting the Wildcard option from the drop-down box. Use an underscore as the wildcard character. For example, to search for all 100-level courses, enter 1__. If you instead use a blank space (1 ), the system will display all courses with a "1" anywhere in the field (101, 310, 241, etc.). To search for labs only, include the "L" in your search.

When you click on the Search button, a list of courses that meet your search criteria will be displayed.

How To Use the Schedule of Classes

Anyone can view the schedule of classes, even without a BroncoNumber and password. Just go to BroncoDirect, click the Schedule of Classes link, and follow the steps below:

  1. Select "Cal Poly Pomona" from the Institution dropbox.
  2. Next, select a term. If you don't know a valid term code, click on the magnifying glass icon next to the field. When the Lookup Term page is displayed, enter as much or as little information as you know (or leave all fields blank if you wish), and click on the Lookup button. A list of valid terms and their codes will be displayed. Find the term you want and click on it. You will be returned to the Schedule of Classes search page, and the term code you selected will be automatically entered in the Term field for you.

Note: Terms are coded as follows: Winter = 1, Spring = 3, Summer = 5, and Fall = 7. The year drops the first zero, so that 2004 = 204, 2005 = 205, etc. To enter Fall 2004, you would use 2047.

  1. You may proceed by performing a Basic or Advanced search. For a Basic search, you must specify at least two selection criteria for the search to complete successfully. The Advanced search option lets you narrow your search based on criteria such as class days, instructor name, and more. To view a complete list of classes, select Cal Poly Pomona as the campus and click the Search button to see results. The more selections and options you give, the more specific your results will be.
    • If you want to search by Subject and don't know the subject code, click the magnifying glass icon to see all available subject areas.
    • If you want to search for courses satisfying the GE requirement, click on 'Class Attributes' under the Advanced Search option.
    • If you want to search by Catalog Number (also called the Class Number) enter the number in the Catalog Number field. For example, to search for CIS 310, use 310 as the Catalog Number. If you select the Wildcard option from the dropdown box next to the Catalog Number field, then the Catalog Number you enter will be treated as a wildcard. For example, if you enter '3' as the Catalog Number and select the Wildcard option, all classes with a '3' anywhere in the Catalog Number will be displayed, assuming those courses also meet your other search criteria.
    • If the Open Classes Only checkbox is checked, you will see only those classes that are open for enrollment. The Open Entry/Exit Classes Only checkbox is not used at Cal Poly Pomona.
    • The Course Component field determines what type of class will display. Some examples are lecture, lab or independent study.
    • Course Career field selects Undergraduate, Graduate, Postbaccalaureate or Extended Education courses.
    • The Session field determines the type of session. At Cal Poly Pomona, most courses are Ten Weeks or one full quarter.
    • The Campus field has only one selection, which is Main Campus.
    • The Location field also only has one selection, which is Cal Poly Pomona.
  2. Click on the Search button to view a list of classes that meet your search criteria.

How To Use Permission Numbers in BroncoDirect (Add Classes page)

Students who encounter an enrollment error message when registering will need to obtain a Permission Number in order to enroll in the class.  Depending on the error message, students will need to request a Permission Number from either the Class Instructor or the Department Office.

Important Message to Students: Permission Numbers will not work (and will be “used up”) if “holds” (service indicators) have not been removed.  Before using a Permission Number for a class, be sure to look at whether you have holds that will prevent you from registering.

·        In Class Nbr field, enter the Class Number and tab out of the field.

·        The Subject/Catalog Number will be displayed.  Verify that the class is correct.  Click Submit.

·        If your add status indicates “Errors Found”, click on “Errors Found”.  The “Enrollment Request Message” page will appear and will tell you the reason for the error.

If the Enrollment Request Message says… Then obtain a Permission Number from…
Not Enrolled, Class ____ Full. Class Instructor
Requisites not met for Class, not enrolled. Department Office or Class Instructor
Permission to enroll in this class is required. Class Instructor
Instructor Consent Required to Enroll in Class, Add Not Processed. Department Office

If you need further assistance in using a Permission Number, please call the Registrar's Office at (909) 869-3000.
