Setting File Permissions for Content Collection Items

Each course receives a 50 megabyte course quota by default. This course quota is used to accommodate students’ assignments, test, and files. Each faculty member has an additional 20 megabytes available in the Content Collection. To make best use of space, we recommend faculty to use the space in the Content Collection to store the course files (PowerPoints, Syllabi, Assignment Descriptions, etc). From a Blackboard course, faculty will use the option of “Link to Content Collection” instead of “Attach Local File”.

Once you have uploaded material to your Content Collection System and have created links to your Content Collection items within your course pages you will want to set File Permissions within your Content Collection to allow your students access to your files.

Checking for Mis-Linked Content Collection Items and Repairing the Link Permisions

When the name of a file or folder within the Content Collection has been changed or moved after a link to that file or folder from a Blackboard course has already been created, broken links can be created. In addition to that, when a course copy process is performed to a new course, Blackboard does not automatically copy or update the student permission to the Content Collection links. In response, Blackboard implemented their Check Collection Links tool to aid faculty in correctly linking Content Collection items and folders. A mis-linked Content Collection item will display this error: "Document Access Error. Document or link not available. File does not exist or permission denied."

  1. Login to Blackboard.
  2. Click your course to enter it.
  3. Click your course's Control Panel.
  4. Click Check Collection Links within the Course Tools area.
  5. Read the disclaimer and click OK.
  6. Once Blackboard has run through your courses and Content Collection it will display any mis-linked items within your course.
    1. Valid Link: This signifies items that have been successfully linked. There are no permission errors.
    2. Repairable permission error: This signifies items which have Read permissions not assigned to them. This means that students will not be able to view them. To repair these types of errors, select the check boxes to the left of them and click Repair.
    3. Path not found: This signifies that an item has been mislinked. Within the Content Collection, it may have been moved, removed, or renamed. To fix this link you must enter the area within your course where the link resides and re-link it to the item in your Content Collection.
    4. Permissions error: This signifies that read permissions are not assigned to these Content Collection items and that you no longer have the correct permission to make the repair.
