Antivirus Information - Software & Updates

Cal Poly Pomona currently offers the McAfee antivirus software free for all staff and faculty members. Staff and faculty members are free to install the antivirus software on their office computers, servers, as well as home systems. However, the current McAfee license does not cover student computers. Students living with the dorms should check with their technical support person for information about available antivirus software.

Download McAfee Antivirus Software:

The university has a license with Network Associates (NAI) for virus protection software for workstations and servers. The license includes upgrades, monthly virus signature updates (dat files) and online technical support. The license agreement comes with a home use option allowing faculty and staff to load VirusScan software onto their home workstations.

The home-use program of McAfee AV has many aspects that require more tracking than this network share provides. Information on the home use program has been below for your reference. The home-use software is still available upon request through the Cal Poly Pomona Help Desk. Bring a blank CD and your Bronco ID card. Users must sign a home-use program agreement.

Note: You must have Adobe Reader to open and view all PDF files with full functionality. To download Adobe Reader 9.2, visit http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html (link opens in a new window).

Alternatively, your local campus tech may download the antivirus software from the Cal Poly Pomona network. Once he/she has successfully connected to the campus software share, he/she will browse to your appropriate software location.

Update Your Antivirus Software - Virus Definitions:

New viruses are created and identified each week. Consequently, it is important that you keep your antivirus software up-to-date with the latest release of virus definitions.

Make sure you have McAfee 8.5i software installed; the manufacturer has already configured it to do automatic security updates.

Note: McAfee is pre-configured to do an auto update if your local campus IT professional installs it. Additionally, McAfee's EPO (ePolicy Orchestrator) agent is also installed, and the end-user does not have the option to change the security update schedule; the AutoUpdate happens automatically. The automatic update is enforced by campus policy (server side).

Note: For use at home, it is not necessary to install the EPO agent, but it is required for campus use. You can manually download the updates from your antivirus vendor or use the built-in update function within the software. For example, Norton uses its "LiveUpdate" feature to update its virus definitions whereas McAfee uses its "AutoUpdate" scheduler.

Schedule an update within your McAfee or Virex application:
