Savanna School District Partnership

A WIN for the district's students and a WIN for Cal Poly Teacher Candidates!

Savanna School District and Cal Poly Pomona have joined together to provide a high quality summer school experience for the district's students. CPP's teacher candidates who have performed exceptionally well in Clinical Practice I may apply to complete Clinical Practice II during the summer in Savanna School District.

A unique quality of the program is inclusion of the district's teacher specialists as on site coaches for teacher candidates as the teacher candidates begin to work with their students from the first day of summer school as THE classroom teacher. District teacher specialists assist in the planning process and coach teacher candidates throughout the experience. Teacher candidates have opportunities to work with grades 4-6 during the first summer school block and grades K-3 during the second summer school block. Additionally, teacher candidates teach in a reading clinic for struggling readers with district specialists and stage parent nights to support parents as first teachers.

The benefit for the children in the district is that they have an opportunity to engage in a high quality summer school experience during these tight budget times. With the support of a new teacher and the district techer specialists, students extend their learning into the summer. Standardized test scores show that students who were taught by teachers in the Savanna Project retain their skills into the next grade level, giving them a much needed jump start and that extra confidence in being successful.

Award Winning Program

Savanna School District with the support of Cal Poly Pomona was awarded the prestigous California Golden Bell Award for a high quality partnership that supports student learning.
