Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology Learning Outcomes

The following materials were developed initially as part of the programs ABET/TAC review process and updated periodically

1. Program Educational Mission and Objectives

1a. Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology (ECET) Program Mission

The University’s published Mission Statement (http://www.csupomona.edu/why_cpp.php) is:

Cal Poly Pomona’s mission is to advance learning and knowledge by linking theory and practice in all disciplines, and to prepare students for lifelong learning, leadership, and careers in a changing, multicultural world.

The ECET program mission statement and objectives are listed below and the program faculty believes them to be consistent with university mission statement.

The ECET Program Mission Statement: (http://www.csupomona.edu/~ecet/ecet-Mission.htm) states:

The primary mission of the ECET program at Cal Poly Pomona is to prepare graduates for productive employment within the electronics and/or computer related industries upon graduation.

1b. Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology Program Objectives

The ECET program objectives are based upon the five Engineering Technology Departmental objectives (www.csupomona.edu/et)

ET Dept. Objective #1 -- Be Effective Engineering Team Members. The program will prepare graduates to be effective members of the "engineering team" utilizing project management techniques.

ET Dept. Objective #2 -- Professional, Global, and Societal Responsibilities. The program will prepare graduates to have an appreciation of the professional, ethical, and societal responsibilities associated with engineering.

ET Dept. Objective #3 -- Technical Competency. The program will prepare graduates to be able to apply established math, science and engineering methods to analyze and solve practical engineering problems in industry.

ET Dept. Objective #4 -- Life Long Learning. The program will prepare graduates to appreciate the need for and utilize life-long learning and continuous improvement techniques to maintain currency in their profession.

ET Dept. Objective #5 -- Effective Communication. The program will prepare graduates to appreciate the need for, and ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form.

The ECET program objectives further refine and add slightly to the departmental objectives to highlight the specific level of implementation at the program level.

ECET Program Objective 1. Prepare graduates to be members of the "engineering team" where they will be able to use standard engineering knowledge, methods and established design procedures to solve applied engineering problems related to testing and/or manufacturing in the electronics and/or computer industries.

ECET Program Objective 2. Prepare graduates with an appreciation of professional, ethical, and social responsibilities associated with engineering.

ECET Program Objective 3. Prepare graduates with a solid understanding of established math, science and engineering methods for analyzing and solving practical engineering problems in industry.

ECET Program Objective 4. Prepare graduates with breadth in engineering science including engineering mechanics, energy systems, electric circuits, materials and processes, and computer usage.

ECET Program Objective 5. Instill in our graduates the importance of life-long learning for keeping technically current on the job.

ECET Program Objective 6. Prepare graduates to be able to communicate effectively in written and oral form.

ECET Program Objective 7. Prepare graduates to be able to work effectively in team settings as team players and team leaders as appropriate, including the use of project management techniques.

ECET Program Objective 8. Prepare graduates to be laboratory proficient, including the use of appropriate hardware, software, and simulation techniques in solving engineering-oriented problems.

Program objectives 3, 4 and 8 provide elaboration of department objective 3 (Technical Competency) and program objectives 1 and 7 provide elaboration of department objective 1 (Effective Engineering Team Members) while the remaining program objectives 2, 5 and 6 closely mirror department objectives 2, 4 and 5.
