Room 9-523

    Communications Lab

      Lab Director: Dave Clark

      Courses Offered:

      ECE405L, ECE448L,, EGR519, EGR586

      ETE485, ETE492

      Laboratory Size: 1434 square feet

Average # of students per year: 207

      Lab Function:

      To provide support for:

      • Analog and digital communication laboratories in ECE and ETE.
      • radio frequency (RF) design
      • Graduate and undergraduate DSP classes
      • System simulation and modeling analysis
      • Signal analysis and modeling
      • Senior and graduate project.

      Lab Status:

It has twelve working stations equipped with

      • Intergraph computer (Pentium 100MHz)
      • Spectrum analyzer-10K to 1.2GHz
      • Two Power Supplies
      • Five Signal sources-DC to 6MHz
      • Oscilloscope
      • two Printers-1 Blk/White, 1 Color
      • Filter, tunable-10 Hz to 1MHz
      • Texas Instruments' digital signal processors.
      • Krohn-Hite filters.

      Current Problems with the Laboratory:

      Lack of:

      • Noise source-difficult to make SNR experiments or measurements
      • Audio range spectral analyzer 0.001 Hz to 20 KHz- not able to look at a spectral content of voice
      • Tunable filter above 1 MHz- not able to model communication systems above 1 MHz

      Equipment Needs:

      1. Twelve Noise sources
      2. Twelve Spectrum analyzers for the audio range
      3. Twelve Tunable filters for above 1 MHz
      4. Twelve computers
